Location: In-person, on-site in Nashville, TN

Employment Type: Full-time, 10-month role for the current 2024-2025 school year.

Salary: $42,770 to $48,230, placement is based on comparable experience

Work Parameters: 

  • This role begins in October 2024, with the new cafe officially launching January 2025 
  • Daily Schedule: Monday through Friday 6:00 AM-2:00 PM; must also attend Faculty Circle weekly every Wednesday from 3:00-3:50 PM. Watch this video to learn more about Circle.
  • Requires moderate physical effort: standing, carrying, bending, stretching, stooping, pulling, pushing, lifting of weights up to 50 lbs.
  • Some exposure to dust, gas, fumes and chemicals
  • Exposed to heat from ovens, burners and steam trays; exposed to cutting and slicing equipment and machines with moving parts; required to move heavy supplies and full pans of food weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; exposed to high noise levels from kitchen equipment and students at meals; required to wear protective clothing
About the Role: 
Valor is seeking a dynamic Cafe Barista who is excited to share our mission of empowering scholars to live inspired and purposeful lives. Valor's Cafe Barista will be an integral part of the Valor Collegiate Academies’ network support "Built to Last" team, starting October 2024. The cafe is being launched in January 2025, requiring this individual to not only create a warm and welcoming atmosphere but also establish and implement the systems and processes to ensure its successful operation.
 
The barista will efficiently handle food sales, maintain a clean and sanitary work and seating area, collect payments, and prepare accurate and balanced tabulation sheets for Food Service accounting. They will work effectively in the cafeteria/kitchen or other designated areas. The role includes cooking responsibilities, and culinary skills are a plus. This position adheres to the highest standards of physical and food safety, freshness, and sanitation, requiring a team member who is dedicated to these principles.
 
Core Responsibilities: 
  • Support the coffee shop and cafeteria as needed
  • Comply with Health Department regulations for food and beverage service
  • Comply with all cash handling procedures and balance register daily
  • Set up and break down the cafe daily
  • Maintain and reconcile all financial records for the cafe accurately
  • Effectively record meal counts, cash collected, and deposits on a daily basis
  • Perform duties of a cafeteria worker as needed, such as: 
    • Assist in the preparation for meal portions which may involve cooking and baking, using various utensils and appliances
    • May perform specialized duties (baking and cooking)
    • Serve students, teachers, and guests
    • Use safety precautions relative to working with food service equipment and materials; report all injuries or unsafe condition to supervisor
  • Keep dispensing and related equipment full and operating; this includes milk and other self-selection food options (condiment stand and self-serve coffee station)
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the cafe: 
    • Clear and clean counters; sweep and mop floors
    • Clean freezers, coolers, and storage areas
    • Clean kitchen appliances
    • Clean and maintain the garbage collection area as needed
    • Store stock in an efficient and safe manner
  • Collaborate around school events with the campus Director of Operations and Athletic Department as well as other opportunities to open up the barista for additional revenue. 
  • Partner with our High School Life Skills classroom to offer work based learning opportunities, when possible

 Critical Experience & Qualifications:

  • Fundamental understanding and working knowledge of POS systems
  • Fundamental understanding of sanitation and cleanliness
  • Must be self-motivated and able to problem solve effectively.
  • Fundamental knowledge and understanding of food preparation, service, storage, sanitation and cleanliness is necessary
  • Basic computer skills required (this includes knowledge of Google Suite)
  • Ability to communicate professionally, both written and verbally, with team and management
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work responsibly
  • Multi-faceted, multi-skilled, resourceful, and willing to do whatever it takes to create healthy meals.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit, is proactive and flexible, and is willing and able to play different roles in the kitchen in order to meet the varied and constant needs of the community at Valor

Preferred Experience:

  • You have at least 3 years of professional work experience in a high volume deli or coffee shop as a barista
  • You have your High School Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Experience in school-based child nutrition is a strong plus
  • Experience in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and fast-growing organization a strong plus
