ROLE DESCRIPTION
Director of Athletics
This position offices in-person, on campus
 
ROLE SUMMARY
The Director of Athletics is an influential leadership role, tasked with managing and advancing the Valor’s athletic department, with a dedicated focus on enhancing the overall student-athlete experience. Serving as the primary leader of the department, the Director of Athletics must actively collaborate with members of the athletic staff, school leaders, faculty, staff, and parents to foster an outstanding student culture within Valor Athletics, aligned with Valor’s vision and mission. Additionally, this leadership position requires proficiency in areas such as project management and fundraising. The success of sports programming relies on maintaining a comprehensive suite of services for students. Calling upon prior experience in high-level athletic department management, the Director of Athletics champions this programming in areas including athletic performance, injury prevention and care, college recruitment, association and league memberships, athletic facility oversight, youth programs and initiatives. The Director of Athletics is also tasked with attracting, retaining, and professionally developing exceptional individuals within the department. In overseeing all facets of the department, the Director of Athletics is committed to providing an exceptional experience for student-athletes. This involves ensuring highly capable coaches, top-notch facilities, and student services that elevate athletes to a collegiate standard.

Athletic Department Leadership Responsibilities - Program and Staff Leadership
  • Provide visionary and inspirational leadership for excellent high school athletics programming
  • Recruit, evaluate, and retain highly capable athletics personnel and coaches who advance the mission and vision of Valor Athletics
  • Inspire and manage athletics department staff effectively
  • Develop, model, and enforce professional standards of conduct among athletic staff members
  • Coordinate, supervise, and lead professional development for head coaches and all athletics staff
  • Provide operational oversight for the duties performed by the athletics department
  • Maintainan evaluation process for athletics staff and ensure seasonal/annual evaluations
  • Develop and execute a yearly Athletics Operating Plan that sets priorities, advances the work of each sports program, addresses the needs of student-athletes, and ensures progress toward overall initiatives according to Valor’s vision and operating plan within the allocated budget
  • Evaluate, establish, and manage appropriate budgets for individual athletic programs
  • Maintain and uphold legal standards, practices, and duties as established by local, state (CHSAA), and national organizations, including those that examine and accredit Valor Christian High School
Athletic Department Leadership Responsibilities - Community Relationships
  • Foster support for the athletic program, elevating school spirit among all educational and community stakeholders; Build direct relationships with parents and donors in fundraising efforts to enhance Valor’s athletic facilities and programs.
  • Maintain an athletic program that promotes sportsmanship and welcomes competing teams and guests
  • Encourage relationships between the school and greater community by engaging positively with community members
  • Ensure all athletic department concerns are addressed in a timely manner, engaging parents and resolving conflict as necessary within a high-performing athletic program.
  • Promote and  with the media for the distribution of information related to interscholastic athletic programs

Collaboration and Communication with the School Leadership Team
  • Together with other members of the Cabinet leadership team, the Director of Athletics is particularly responsible for defining, cultivating and leading our Christian community. Cabinet leaders must not only comply with standards but also affirm additional distinctive Christian beliefs of our community in the Christian Community Policy or otherwise as determined by the board of directors.
  • Work collaboratively with Cabinet leaders in Academics, Arts, Discovery, Student Life, and Spiritual Formation to discuss and provide action on critical issues facing the school and to engage the community in school-wide initiatives that propel the school forward in alignment with a distinctively Christian mission and vision
  • Serve as the communication liaison between athletic staff and the Cabinet leadership team. Participate in open dialogue with team members to ensure that gaps are filled in with knowledge and trust is promoted across pillar areas
  • Effectively communicate all matters related to the athletics program, seek counsel, and meet regularly with the Associate Head of School and other school leadership members.
  • Periodically engage with the Board of Directors to seek input on strategic planning and provide monthly information about the work of the athletic department

RESULTS
The Director of Athletics will provide strong leadership, driven by a desire to create an exceptional Christian athletic experience. Through performance data and survey feedback, the Director of Athletics will have a clear understanding of areas of improvement for the athletic staff and coaching team and will ensure that the parent and student experience is executed at a high level. The Director of Athletics will display a commitment to the Valor community, paying special attention to hearing and responding to the needs of families. Under this person’s guidance, the athletic department will be on the cutting edge of best practices, remaining above reproach in all that they do and expecting excellence from every team member.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field required; Masters preferred
  • Minimum required of 5 years of experience in high school or collegiate athletic leadership
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Background in coaching and track record of leadership success
  • Familiar with utilizing emerging technologies, software, and applications to promote and enrich student activities
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The same basic physical demands described here are the same for all employees to successfully perform the essential functions of their jobs. Employees must periodically lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and could occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral/depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics are varied and include classroom, office, and outdoor events while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is also varied.

POSITION TYPE: C: Year-round schedule. 12-Month Calendar. This position offices in-person, on campus
 
HOURS PER WEEK: Full-time, Non-Exempt.
 
SUPERVISOR: Associate Head of School
 
PAY RANGE: $90,000 - $120,000
