Job Summary
The Advanced Practice Clinician is a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) that is responsible for providing office based, hospital based, and surgical assistant care to patients who seek and are referred to the service. A strong clinical background with a deep understanding of neurosurgery management and treatment is essential. Such care will include history and physical examination, evaluation of specific concerns and planning and coordinating with physicians for the effective treatment of conditions. This position may include seeing patients for initial consults and follow-up in ambulatory and hospital setting as well as assisting the surgical team in the operating room. The NP/PA would also provide phone follow-up to patient, family member, caregiver questions and concerns regarding the plan of care. Accountable for patient care in such a way as to ensure the highest quality standards for the practice of medicine are achieved, within the scope of a PA/NP’s license, established medical protocols and expertise. Must use interpersonal skills to assure patient/customer satisfaction. Accountable for assuring an efficient and productive office/hospital setting by performing activities necessary to accomplish this goal in a team-based care environment.

Education
Graduation from an accredited school of Physician Assistants required.

Experience
Previous community health and wellness services experience desired as well as prior experience in an office setting for one year in primary care or hospital based care is preferred. Knowledgeable in the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological stages of human growth and development.

Certification & Licensures
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) - AHA approved required *
Possesses and maintains an unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant in Virginia.
Possesses and maintains an unrestricted DEA license to prescribe in Virginia.
Maintains and provides proof of CME requirements as put forth by the Virginia Board of Medicine.
Recertification, if required, is necessary.
Physician Assistant board certified by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
OR
Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Certification as Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Based on primary state of residency and in accordance with current Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations, must be licensed or eligible to practice pending licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia with either a Multi-state license, under the Nurse Licensure Compact OR a Single-state license, valid in Virginia only Successful completion of the credentialing process through the WMC Department of Medical Staff Affairs is required if working at a hospital-based clinic or seeing patients in the hospital. Current relevant specialty certification through the AACN or ANCC is required Licensed to prescribe medication in the State of Virginia required.
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
* New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.
Additional Certification Preferred.


Qualifications
Approval from appropriate hospital credentials committee
Must be thoroughly familiar with the principles and practice of a PA or an NP. Must have a general knowledge of the operation and administration of a medical office and hospital.
Must possess well-developed interpersonal skills to work smoothly and productively with patients as well as administrative, nursing and medical staff.
Must be able to perform activities that involve an independent evaluation or treatment of a patient’s medical condition.
Must be willing to receive additional training, as needed, and remain current on the skills necessary for the performance of required duties.
The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status, and interpret the appropriate information needed in order to provide care for the age group of patients served.
