What You Will Do:

The Surgical Scheduler is responsible for surgical scheduling for department providers, oversight and coordination of block time, and working with operating room (OR) schedulers to optimize provider OR time and schedules. The Surgical Scheduler reports to the Manager, Physician Practice.
Responsibilities and Duties
Responsible for scheduling surgical cases according to scheduling guidelines and current block schedule using faxes, emails, telephone and other incoming communication mechanisms as appropriate. Responsible for obtaining insurance authorizations, including providing pre-registration, verifying insurance and ensuring preauthorization requirements have been met from all potential payor sources. Performs outgoing calls to patients and physician offices regarding reschedules and cancelations. Cross-references patient and department information for multiple procedures to improve patient flow and minimize risk of clinical contradictions. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of procedures, policies, insurance requirements, and registration and patient access function and tools by actively participating in in-services and training sessions. Required to accurately document information into Epic as appropriate.

What You Will Bring:

Education

High School Diploma or GED required
Associates preferred

Experience
Minimum one year of surgical scheduling experience required.
Previous physician office experience required.
Experience with basic keyboarding and Microsoft Office required.


Qualifications
Demonstrates a high-level understanding and application of insurance payors and interpretation of medical benefits.
Extensive medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT coding highly preferred.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required, including ability to speak with patients, providers, payors and internal customers while inputting information online.
Must be able to successfully apply medical necessity criteria and authorization criteria to individual situations.
Demonstrates a high-level understanding of discount programs and payment options.
Must be able to communicate denials and peer to peer requests to physician office teams, as well as requests for additional clinical information and orders.
Ability to work with minimal supervision on individual and team projects.
