Job Summary: The Ski Patrol Director oversees all aspects of the professional ski patrol. This includes staffing, training, budgeting, scheduling, inter departmental relations, and guest service. Additionally, the Ski Patrol Director is responsible for ensuring mountain safety for our guests and employees, overseeing medical aid, overseeing snow safety and avalanche control operations, rope rescue, lift and gondola evacuation and avalanche rescue. In addition, the job requires extensive summertime work to improve trails, create new trails and supervise the summer gondola medic crew. The job requires strong leadership qualities, ability to problem solve, creativity, and outside the box thinking.
- Overall fiscal responsibility for department including department labor and supplies budget, staffing to budget and business volumes.
- Promotes a guest service culture within the department
- Daily interaction with Mtn. Safety department to ensure safest possible experience for guests
- Ensures facilitation of bi weekly safety meetings with staff, promotes safety culture, and participates with Vail wide Ski Patrol best practices group
- Avalanche hazard forecasting, avalanche control, control and oversight of explosives, and avalanche rescue
- Interdepartmental and intradepartmental relations to promote team unity. Manages outside agencies relations with groups such as the US Forrest Service and National Ski Patrol.
- Winter mountain setup and maintenance including trail openings and closures, signage, ropes, and pads
- Oversees departmental training program, schedule of training, training topics, and safety during training
- Oversees candidate/apprentice program including budget and staff levels. Oversees testing of candidates to patrol level, forecasting needs for future patrollers
- Direct oversight of Accident Investigation team including hiring of team, training, and coordinating with Risk Management
- Summertime responsibilities include trail maintenance and improvement, and supervision of summer medics.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an Accredited University or equivalent combination of training and experience to compensate a degree program.
- 5 years ski patrol experience, preferably in a Supervisory capacity
- Minimum 3 years previous supervisory experience
- Qualified to organize and direct out of bounds search and rescues, lift evacuation, coordinate Mass Causality Incidents
- Strong guest service attitude
- ICS Training
- EMT-B, CPR
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc
- Avalanche rescue operations, trained in avalanche forecasting and control methods, Level Three avalanche training
- English
