Wholesale Markets Director
Description
Uplight is creating a new category of energy. We make software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses—including things like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and even people’s behavior—to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, making it more efficient and reliable. This creates clean energy capacity that can be used by the power grid instead of burning more fossil fuels. Our solutions accelerate the transition to clean energy and save money for energy customers.
Uplight is seeking an entrepreneurial Wholesale Markets Director to lead the expansion of our wholesale market services. Joining our Corporate and Market Development team, you will bridge the gap between complex regulatory landscapes and our core business units (Sales, Operations, and Product). You will architect the strategy to monetize thousands of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) across North America, ensuring our Virtual Power Plant (VPP) solutions align with market rules to mitigate risk and maximize returns for Uplight and our utility clients.
What you get to do:
Strategic and Regulatory Planning
- Economic Strategy: Develop economic strategies to help utility clients monetize aggregated resources in capacity, energy, and ancillary services markets.
- Commercial Support: Act as the lead subject matter expert during RFPs and business development to translate complex market rules into winning commercial requirements.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure operational leaders maintain adherence to evolving market rules and participation requirements.
Operational Excellence & Risk Mitigation
- Market Integration: Advise Product and Operations teams on end-to-end market participation requirements, including asset registration, forecasting, dispatch, and settlement.
- Risk Oversight: Identify and mitigate operational risks associated with wholesale market entry and execution.
Institutional Knowledge & Influence
- Capability Building: Establish internal SOPs and training programs to scale wholesale market knowledge across Product and Operations teams.
- Market Advocacy: Build relationships with ISOs/RTOs and industry coalitions to advocate for rule changes that benefit Uplight and our clients.
What you bring to Uplight:
We recognize that great leaders come from diverse backgrounds. If you are passionate about the future of the grid and have a strong foundation in wholesale markets, we encourage you to apply.
- Deep Market Expertise: Expert-level knowledge of North American wholesale power markets, specifically CAISO, PJM, ERCOT, or MISO. While 8–10+ years of experience is typical, your demonstrable market impact is what matters most.
- VPP/DER Monetization: A proven track record of managing behind-the-meter (BTM) or front-of-the-meter (FTM) assets.
- Regulatory Fluency: Understanding of FERC Order 2222 and its implications for utility compliance and market integration.
- Cross-Functional Orchestration: Ability to align external consultants and analysts with internal Commercial, Delivery, and Product/Engineering teams.
- Strategic Vision: Ability to anticipate "where the puck is going" in wholesale energy markets to inform multi-year business planning.
How you will make an impact:
This role is a critical value-driver as we operationalize DERs in wholesale markets. Your success will be measured by your impact across the following factors:
- Growth: Identify and capture new revenue by translating wholesale market opportunities into scalable commercial offerings.
- Organizational Influence: Bridge the gap between regulatory constraints and business goals to ensure internal teams are aligned on a unified market strategy.
- Market Transformation: Enable utility partners to successfully navigate and maximize value within FERC 2222-compliant market structures.
- Financial Performance: Directly contribute to the P&L through successful contract expansions and high-value client engagements.
Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women, marginalized genders and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At Uplight we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
