Commercial Strategy Manager

Strategy & Professional Services United States

Description

Uplight is creating a new category of energy. We make software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses—including things like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and even people’s behavior—to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, making it more efficient and reliable. This creates clean energy capacity that can be used by the power grid instead of burning more fossil fuels. Our solutions accelerate the transition to clean energy and save money for energy customers.

We are looking for a Commercial Strategy Manager to drive our company forward, and help us lead the clean energy revolution!

How you will make an impact:

  • Build out financial models and manage daily cash flow and commercial strategy modeling, serving as a key contributor to the strategic finance function.
  • Evolve our commercial strategy, providing data-driven insights that directly inform and empower the sales team to win more business.
  • Support post-mortems on closed deals — both wins and losses — synthesizing findings to sharpen our go-to-market approach and reduce deal cycle times.
  • Stand up and deploy variations of deal-tracking infrastructure, building systems that give leadership real-time visibility into pipeline health and commercial performance.
  • Conduct loss analysis and translate findings into actionable intelligence that helps the sales function understand competitive dynamics and improve win rates.
  • Provide general corporate strategy support, helping to build out the strategic finance team and serving as a thought partner to senior leadership.
  • Support month-end variance analysis, explaining actuals vs. forecast and turning those findings into clear, actionable narratives for internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare and contribute to board presentation materials, synthesizing complex financial and strategic data into clear, compelling narratives for executive and board-level audiences.

What you bring to Uplight:

  • 2–3 years of experience in strategy consulting, investment banking, corporate strategy, or a similar analytical role — Big 4 or equivalent backgrounds are a strong fit.
  • Commercial strategy experience — you understand deal structures, how businesses grow, and how data can sharpen commercial decision-making.
  • Fundamental comfort with numbers and financial modeling — strong Excel skills or a genuine eagerness to develop them. A finance background is not required, but numeracy is a must.
  • An earnest, inquisitive, self-starter mindset — you're someone who digs in, asks the right questions, and figures things out independently without needing a rigid playbook.
  • Adaptability and moldability — you're ready to move beyond a large corporate structure, bring your best skills, and grow into exactly what the business needs.

Bonus points:

  • Experience at a Big 4 firm or top-tier consulting practice — you've thrived in that environment and are now excited to bring that rigor to a leaner, faster-moving team.
  • Exposure to energy, utilities, or clean tech — passion for the mission is just as valuable as domain expertise.
  • Comfort building or iterating on financial models and dashboards from scratch — you're not intimidated by a blank spreadsheet.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women, marginalized genders and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At Uplight we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
