Head of International Market Development and Regulatory Innovation

Regulatory United States

Description

Uplight is creating a new category of energy. We build software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses—including things like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and even people’s behavior—to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, making it more efficient and reliable. This creates clean energy capacity that can be used by the power grid instead of burning more fossil fuels. Our solutions accelerate the transition to clean energy and save money for energy customers.
We are looking for a Head of International Market Development and Regulatory Innovation
to drive our company forward, and help us lead the clean energy revolution!
As the Head of International Market Development and Regulatory Innovation, you will provide a blend of consultative engagement, thought leadership, and strategic insight to support regulatory proceedings that develop new commercial opportunities for Uplight.
How you will make an impact:
  • Help commercialize and grow industry-leading clean energy programs, including virtual power plants (VPPs), by providing electric power market assessment, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory strategy expertise.
  • Focus on wholesale regulatory and policy issues spanning European, APAC, North American, and other global regions.
  • Collaborate closely with Uplight’s U.S. and international business leaders to achieve core growth objectives.
  • Market Assessment Expertise
  • Assess market opportunities that emerge as a result of regulatory and policy changes and develop policy strategies to advance deployment of in-front-of -the-meter (IFM) and behind-the-meter (BTM) clean energy solutions. Galvanize internal and external resources to execute against that strategy.
  • Track wholesale and retail regulatory and legislative developments in coordination with marketing, market intelligence, sales, product, and customer success colleagues.
  • Model and estimate value creation for DERs across energy, ancillary services, and network service products.
  • Understand and quantify how regulatory and market developments impact customer business models and growth.
  • Analyze regulatory rules and regulations that impact Uplight’s business across energy, capacity and ancillary service markets.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication Expertise
  • Engage market operators, regulators, and trade organizations to:
  • Advocate for effective market development policies with specific emphasis on solar + storage and virtual power plant (VPP) opportunities that align with Uplight's current and future product strategy.
  • Elevate the stature and perceived effectiveness of Uplight’s software solutions in the overall policy considerations and recommendations of regulators.
  • Describe the value proposition of Uplight's products, especially as they relate to wholesale power market policies.
  • Influence program design in a pragmatic, effective, and bold direction.
  • Support procurements and cost recovery of Uplight products.
  • Evangelize Uplight’s brand as a thought partner and industry expert - e.g., testify before regulatory bodies, speak at conferences, participate in industry groups, etc.
  • Collaborate internally, leveraging policy and regulatory expertise to inform the company’s product and go-to-market strategy and support sales efforts.
  • Engage in the highest impact regulatory proceedings to secure necessary approvals for the commercialization of and cost recovery for Uplight solutions.
  • Skills and experience are necessary, but we hire on value alignment first, so if you feel you would be a good fit with us, still consider applying.
What you bring to Uplight:
  • 6+ years of experience in the electric power, utility, or climate space.
  • Regulatory Strategy Expertise
  • Experience working with key stakeholders in the electric power industry, including market operators, regulators, policymakers, utilities, advocates, and/or nonprofits.
  • Understanding of the hurdles in decarbonization of the electric power ecosystem through domain experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • wholesale electricity markets (strongly desired),
    • utility and market regulations/requirements,
    • on-site renewables and energy optimization,
    • DER markets and programs or virtual power plants and applicable market opportunities.
  • Ability to apply both creative and critical thinking to nuanced policy and political situations.
  • Exceptional communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to make complex topics accessible for a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Experience performing basic data analysis and modeling
  • A spirit of collaboration - and also strong conviction and willingness to have uncomfortable conversations in order to advance the speed and scale of decarbonization opportunities.
  • Creativity, pragmatism, a keen commercial sense and a bias for action.
  • The ability to travel for work trips when in-person presence is important (estimated 25%).
Bonus points:
  • A master’s degree in public policy or a juris doctorate (JD).
  • Demonstrated experience in wholesale power markets in the U.S. or internationally.
