Global Classics and Jazz (GCJ) is a division within Universal Music Group (UMG) focusing specifically on classical and jazz music throughout the company. Working with the company’s market leading and iconic labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Blue Note, ECM, Verve/Decca US and Mercury KX, it is the largest and most successful classical and jazz recorded music business in the world. Global Classics and Jazz is committed to growing the international profile for UMG’s genre-leading artists and labels.


The B Side: Skills & Experience

Be Organised

  • Help co-ordinate regular communication calls
  • Monitor media uptake and social media output
  • Create international press reports including internal newsletters
  • Write and edit press releases and draft internal communications


Be Collaborative


  • Assist with GCJ conferences and events
  • Support creation and editing of presentations for GCJ team
  • Support international media campaigns for UMG artists, labels and releases
  • Support the wider GCJ marketing team with international promotion and interviews
  • Carry out research and handle media related enquiries internally and externally


Be Commercial


  • Identify and generate news stories and help create storytelling tools
  • Work across recorded music, audio-visual content and GCJ related partners
  • Maintain media contacts and constantly expand personal network of journalists, across TV, radio, print and online


Person Specification




  • A broad understanding of today’s PR and communications environment
  • Knowledge of classical and/or jazz music
  • Confident communicator across all levels of seniority internally and externally 
  • Excellent writing skills and story-telling ability
  • Strong traditional PR skills and media relations expertise in the music, digital or entertainment industries 
  • Broad range of active international media contacts
  • Attention to detail and highly developed organisation skills, deadline driven
  • Ability to multi-task, think quickly and exercise sound judgement 
  • Confidential and trustworthy, must be a team player and open to guidance 
  • Self-motivated
  • Experience with events, media and content launches
  • Design and content creation skills
  • News obsessed – both music and wider media business 
  • Ambition and tenacity




  • Languages
  • Familiarity with translations or ability to translate
  • An understanding of music in 2022 and how the industry, media and fans interact 
  • Digital and social media strategy experience 
  • Experience in crisis management
  • Experience with internal corporate communications 
  • An understanding of digital innovation and evolving technologies
