The A Side: A Day in The Life


As Head of Learning & Development for UMG, you will work closely with the PIC team to promote an inclusive learning and development culture. You will co-create UK wide people-based strategies and initiatives that are aligned to the company’s purpose and various cultures and that drive and embed positive change. You will also oversee the support of UMG business areas by identifying, designing, delivering, and evaluating bespoke group and individual learning initiatives. Alongside this, there are growing opportunities to support international teams with their development strategies and interventions.

A ‘hands-on’ influencer, you will have the opportunity to add value across all aspects of L&D in collaboration with the wider PIC team. Utilising coaching and consultative approaches, you always try to find the root cause of any development required and deliver excellent initiatives.

As a holistic L&D expert you enjoy embedding yourself into a business, uncovering and diving deep into employee, team and business area challenges, goals, skills and more. Your mindset is solutions-led, and you’re committed to keeping open communication across the business, including feeling confident challenging what we are doing and why. This is a visible and collaborative role that requires a highly proactive approach, requiring a combination of analytical thinking alongside a creative, growth mindset.

Be Collaborative


  • Lead and work alongside the L&D team to co-create and deliver L&D strategies and plans
  • Work with and through the PIC team to effectively collaborate on UK wide projects and initiatives
  • Constantly review and analyse what you’re finding out about the business, both personally and through solid relationships across the functions
  • You will work closely with the UMUK Head of L&D, PIC team leads and Finance team to effectively manage the central L&D budgets and own the UMG L&D budget


Be Strategic


  • Work closely with the PIC team leads and internal stakeholders to identify effective initiatives and support the immediate needs of the business as well as ensuring long term strategy and planning is completed in a proactive way
  • Own training needs analysis all the way through to evaluation for all support
  • Actively project manage the L&D team initiatives with the co-Head of L&D


 Be a Leader and Manager


  • Effectively manage the UMG L&D team and co-manage the L&D department in an agile and collaborative way
  • Co-own the management of the L&D team’s goals and priorities
  • Complete all line management responsibilities for the UMG L&D team
  • Work with co-Head of L&D to drive forward key PIC projects including but not limited to; Wellbeing, Inclusion and Belonging, Connectivity, Employee Experience and more
  • Take ownership and manage ROI and department and group budgets


Be a Subject Matter Expert


  • Demonstrate significant knowledge and expertise within people-based strategies and initiatives
  • Have strong knowledge and experience in diverse areas of learning and development theory, models, tools and resources
  • Be the go-to expert for all things L&D, from individual development plans to designing, delivering, and evaluating a variety learning and developments initiatives


Person Specification




  • Experience of working in fast paced and diverse organisations
  • Ability to use own initiative to take ownership and work autonomously, proactively seek creative solutions when problem solving, apply critical thinking when making decisions and be able communicate with clarity and real conviction
  • Ability to lead by example in all aspects of the role and promotes positive values, attitudes, and behaviours
  • Significant L&D business partnering experience at a senior level and is energised and ready to be actively part of implementing effective learning solutions for a range of audiences: both groups and individuals
  • Can deliver and facilitate cross company development sessions
  • Ability to build and maintain meaningful and trusted relationships with key external and internal stakeholders and all employees
  • Share knowledge and apply skills, including challenging our processes and ways of working. You’re comfortable implementing iterations and seeking feedback quickly, from a variety of sources
  • Ability to manage the complexities of dealing with a high volume of tasks with conflicting deadlines
  • Be able to work with many different businesses and stakeholders, at various stages of their people strategy



  • Chartered CIPD qualified (or equivalent) or evidence of proactive growth mindset
  • Experienced user of a range of psychometric and other tools e.g. Insights Discovery, MBTI (or equivalent)
  • Experience working in a Media or Music organisation
