How we LEAD: 

The VP of Data Management & Platform Operations is a newly created role that will be responsible for the development and implementation of the data management and platforms to support UMG’s fan ecosystem. This person is expected to provide leadership and expertise in all aspects of Data Management including improvement of the quality and fidelity of data consumed by business processes and analytics use cases, including the Fan360 data platform.

The ideal candidate must have owned a data platform in a large-scale big data environment and led a team of data architects, developers, and engineers. You will bring passion for using technology to create efficiencies, and solve complex data problems at scale. You love talking with analysts, developers, engineers, business owners and executives, and can translate business requirements, pain points into data products and solutions.

UMG (Universal Music Group) is embarking on a multiyear journey to build a global fan ecosystem and accelerate eCommerce growth. To support this effort, cross-functional teams have been tasked with rapidly building, testing, and scaling high-priority use cases that drive fan and eCommerce growth. These use cases require significant advances in knowledge of fans, analytical models, supporting data structures, and data features leveraged to deliver fan experiences.  This leader will deploy teams to build and maintain the foundational data and analytics platforms required to support the long-term vision.

This leader will work closely with the labels as well as the central eCommerce, marketing, IT teams to define and track progress towards key fan data platform milestones. This leader will also work closely with the Chief Marketing Officer and the Vice President of Enterprise Data & Analytics to define the data and analytics roadmaps required to support the Fan ecosystem. They will also work closely with a variety of other data and analytics experts from across the enterprise (e.g., territories and labels) to leverage past learnings and share best practices. The individual will report into the Chief Data and Analytics Officer.

How you’ll CREATE:  

  • Collaborate with key business stakeholders to establish a vision for the management of all fan related data assets that, across all artists, labels, platforms, channels, and territories.
  • Recruit and build a team to execute on this vision.
  • Develop and implement data platform vision and roadmap in partnership with broader data and business teams.
  • Maintain and innovate our data platforms providing access to business reporting to executives, business leaders and key data tools to the analytics teams globally.
  • Drive design, development, productization and timely execution of a range of data solutions.
  • Optimize processes and bring the right tools to help the team operate efficiently - project management, code management, data quality and communicate timely and effectively.
  • Provide guidance, day-to-day management, and review to the team on short- and long-term projects.
  • Support team growth. Become an advocate for the team, promote a culture of excellence, data driven discussions, healthy skepticism, knowledge sharing, expanding team’s skill set, teamwork and fun.
  • Build strong relationships with cross functional stakeholders and build/update data solutions to support stakeholder and project objectives. Engage in proactive discussions translate business requirements, pain points into data products and solutions
  • Develop strong understanding of UMG businesses and core KPIs.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and negotiate contracts.
  • Partners cross—functionally across the organization, including IT, Marketing, E-Commerce as well as analytics and insights groups across UMG
  • Oversees and manages vendors, vendor contracts and appropriate SLAs
  • Works with key stakeholders to formulate a comprehensive plan that is consistent with the overall business objectives and budgetary considerations.
  • Applies broad knowledge of capabilities and environment to identify new growth areas, innovative technology and emerging opportunities. Conducts technological research by studying organization goals, strategies, practices, and user projects. Recommends information technology strategies, policies, and procedures by evaluating organization outcomes; identifying problems; evaluating trends; anticipating requirements.
  • Manages budgets, operational plans, and performance requirements.
  • Primary function of this role includes:
    • Working with Agile and DevOps/DataOps techniques and implementation approaches to deliver solutions, ensuring the Data Management platform components are kept current and upgraded.
    • Utilizing strong technical acumen to lead delivery, planning, and execution of database tuning and refinement
    • Representing data management for the organization.
    • Managing deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of technology related to Data Management and associated products
    • Building KPIs for capabilities within data management to provide a transparent view of the data ecosystem.

Bring your VIBE:

  • A./B.S. or equivalent degree. Degree in a quantitative data related field, computer science/data engineering is a huge plus.
  • 15+ years of experience in data product management, data engineering and architecture
  • 5+ years of people management experience and progressively bigger scope and responsibility
  • Experience in conceptualizing, building, and managing data platforms and products ranging from business intelligence, reporting frameworks and advanced analytics including AI/ML.
  • Experience supporting analytics, marketing, and other consumer focused functions as well as other commercial applications.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to translate end-user requirements into data platforms with a scaling mindset
  • Should have owned data platform and led a team of platform analysts and data engineers.
  • Experience in delivering capabilities such as CDP (Customer Data Platform), MDM ecosystems, Data Quality Management, and Data Catalogues are a definite plus.
  • Record of accomplishment of building and managing both real-time and batch data utilities to derive unified customer views
  • Experience in creating analytics workflows using Airflow, dBT, etc.
  • Knowledge of Privacy regulations
  • Experience with Cloud-first data architecture is essential, with hands on experience on GCP/BQ a big plus
  • Knowledge of analytical methods, data science methods, including machine learning and AI
  • Experience with vendor and vendor contract management, including SLA review.
  • Experience planning, developing, and managing departmental expense and capital budgets.
  • Critical thinking, project management, troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Great attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge or experience in the music or broader entertainment industry is beneficial
