Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists is seeking an experienced, board-certified specialist to serve as our Director of Specialty Medicine. This is a high-impact leadership role for a clinician who wants to help shape hospital standards, support specialist growth and retention, and guide specialty medicine through an exciting period of expansion.
This position is ideal for a specialist in Neurology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine, Radiology, or Dentistry who enjoys excellent clinical medicine, mentoring other doctors, building strong systems, and leading through thoughtful collaboration.
About the Role
The Director of Specialty Medicine will work closely with the Director of Emergency Medicine, Medical Director, and Group Medical Director to strengthen clinical quality, improve consistency across services, and support a culture where specialists and their teams can thrive.
This role combines clinical practice with medical leadership. The Director will continue to work clinically in their specialty while helping guide the broader specialty team, service growth, and hospital standards.
What You’ll Do
Leadership and Medical Standards
- Provide leadership, management, and accountability for the specialist team
- Support consistent standards of care across all specialty services
- Partner with hospital leadership to strengthen quality systems, communication, and clinical collaboration
- Help align specialty services around shared expectations, patient care standards, and team-based medicine
- Support specialist engagement, mentorship, and retention
- Help build thoughtful operational structures that allow specialists and their teams to do their best work
- Contribute to specialty growth planning, service development, and long-term strategy
- Collaborate across departments to improve patient flow, referral communication, and the client experience
- Participate in specialty recruiting, interviews, and candidate engagement
- Represent CCVS at conferences, events, and professional opportunities
- Travel approximately 15% for recruiting and industry-related events
- Maintain clinical case responsibilities in your specialty
- Spend approximately half of your time in clinical practice
- Continue contributing directly to high-quality patient care while helping lead specialty medicine at the hospital level
Business and Department Operations
- Contribute to specialty department budgeting and resource planning
- Support specialist compensation planning and performance structure
- Help develop sustainable systems that support both clinical excellence and long-term growth

Growth on the Horizon
CCVS is actively expanding to meet the needs of Cape Cod, the Islands, and the surrounding referral community. Our physical expansion is on track for completion in March 2027 and includes:
- A 10,000 sq. ft. hospital addition
- Expanded specialist support in Internal Medicine, Dermatology, and Diagnostic Imaging
- The addition of three new specialty departments: Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Dentistry
- Continued growth of our emergency, critical care, and specialty services
Qualifications
Required
- Board certification in a relevant specialty, including:
- DACVIM, Small Animal Internal Medicine or Neurology
- DACVR
- DAVDC
- DACVO
- DACVD
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent
- Eligibility for Massachusetts veterinary licensure
- DEA licensure, as applicable
- Minimum of 3 years post-residency experience in small animal specialty practice
- Strong communication, collaboration, and clinical leadership skills
Preferred
- Prior managerial or leadership experience, such as:
- Medical Director
- Department Head
- Service Lead
- Mentorship Lead
- Specialty team leadership or equivalent experience
Compensation and Benefits
- Competitive salary range of $220,000 to $245,000, plus production
- Compensation based on experience, qualifications, and schedule
