Position Summary

The Occupational Therapist assesses, plans, organizes, and participates in rehabilitative programs that help restore vocational, homemaking, and daily living skills, as well as general independence, to disabled persons.


Major Responsibilities:

Plans, organizes, and conducts occupational therapy programs to help rehabilitate those impaired because of illness, injury or psychological or developmental problems.

Tests and evaluates patients' physical and mental abilities and analyze medical data to determine realistic rehabilitation goals for patients.

Selects activities that will help individuals learn work and life-management skills within limits of their mental and physical capabilities.

Evaluates patients' progress and prepare reports that detail progress.  Adjust treatment plan as appropriate.

Completes and maintains all necessary records and documentation thoroughly, accurately and promptly.

Trains caregivers how to provide for the needs of a patient during and after therapy.

Recommends changes in patients' work or living environments, consistent with their needs and capabilities.

Develops and participates in health promotion programs, group activities, or discussions to promote client health, facilitate social adjustment, alleviate stress, and prevent physical or mental disability.

Consults with rehabilitation team to select activity programs and coordinate occupational therapy with other therapeutic activities.

Plans and implements programs and social activities to help patients adjust to handicaps.

Follows the procedures and policies of the department.

Meets established productivity standards.

Facilitates and promotes the sharing of knowledge and content throughout departments.

Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the UMass Memorial Health System True North.

Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required or directed. Keeps current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards and/or books, bulletin boards, posted notices and reads and responds to e mails on a regular basis.

Practices cost containment and fiscal responsibility through the efficient use of supplies, equipment, time, etc.

Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.

Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.

Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.

Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.

Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed. 

All responsibilities are essential job functions.

Position Qualifications:

Ability to speak, read and write fluently in English.

Ability to act and communicate professionally at all times.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patients, caregivers, managers and other staff.

Must be self-directed and able to have appropriate clinical judgment.

In-depth knowledge of standards of practice within the profession of Occupational Therapy.

Ability to follow policies and procedures.

Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapist program.  See certification requirement below.

Prior experience providing Occupational Therapy to patients in a clinical setting is helpful.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC. :

Current NBCOT Certified.  Currently licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 

Basic Life Support Certification ((American Red Cross (ARC) BLS certification required).

American Heart Association course completion card accepted at time of hire/transfer but AHA BLS is required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
