Position Summary

Directs and coordinates activities of Nursing Services, Social Services and Occupational Therapy on the Geriatric Medical Psychiatry Unit.  Is responsible for the recommendation, development, and implementation of approved policies and procedures.  Recommends capital and operation budget, including staffing needs.  Maintains operational aspects of the area within approved budget.  Assists in planning for service growth and development of new services.  Recommends staff qualifications and maintains competent staff.  Coordinates performance improvement activities within Hospital plan. Supervises all nursing staff on the Geriatric Medical Psychiatry Unit.


Major Responsibilities:

Participates in the development of a recommended service plan for the geriatric medical psychiatry services evidenced by senior management meetings on the GMPU.

Coordinates and integrates services with other departments evidenced through multidisciplinary process teams and interdepartmental policies and procedures.

Recommends and documents planned staffing pattern to meet patient needs.  Maintains reports which demonstrate staffing patterns per plan and/or provides documentation to explain variances.

Documents policies and procedures to guide and support the provision of services.  Policies and procedures are in compliance with DNV standards, Federal and State regulations, and currently accepted practice.  Nursing standards are consistent with Hospital Nursing Department and approved by VP of Patient Care Services.

Develops, justifies, and submits to supervisor a fiscal plan (capital & operational budget) for services on GMPU.  Maintains revenue and expenses within budget and/or reports variances to Supervisor.

Documents and recommends to supervisor the resource needs of staff to provide patient care on the unit.

Develops and maintains a quality improvement program that meets the requirements outlined by the Hospital Quality Improvement Council.

Documents recommended staff competency levels and qualifications.

Recruits, interviews and selects staff that meet qualifications required for the applicable position.  Adheres to Hospital Employment Policy and Procedure.

Meets established productivity standards.

Facilitates and promotes the sharing of knowledge and content throughout departments.

Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the UMass Memorial Health System True North.

Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.

Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.

Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.

Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.

Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

All responsibilities are essential job functions.

Position Qualifications:


Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts or Licensed Social Worker in Massachusetts

Experience with geriatric, psychiatric patients

Requires Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Social Work or Management

Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Nursing or Social Work preferred

At least five-years of management experience, preferred. 


Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments.  The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
