The resident PA or NP practices under the general supervision of a physician. His/her scope of practice includes: obtaining a complete medical history; performing a physical examination; ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies; formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan; prescribing and/or dispensing medication; assisting in surgery or other invasive procedures; and counseling patients and families under supervision of a physician. In addition, the Resident PA or NP is required to participate in a program of instruction provided by the Program and is expected to satisfy the academic requirement of this Program, as determined by the Program Director and the Medical Director.
A Bachelor Degree and graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program are required. The employee must have a current license, issued by the Physician Assistant and/or Nurse Practitioner Board of the Massachusetts Office of Health and Human Services; current NCCPA and/or ANCC certification; Massachusetts Controlled Substances registration (or eligible); federal DEA Controlled Substance registration (or eligible), BLS and ACLS
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
Performs and documents a complete history and physical examination, including review of the available medical record, to formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Orders and reviews appropriate laboratory tests and imaging studies.
Participates in daily inpatient rounds and records daily progress notes.
Requests consultations and communicates with consultants.
Performs routine bedside procedures as described in the “Delineation of Privileges”.
Performs appropriate advanced procedures under direct physician supervision, or, when such privileges are granted, under indirect supervision.
Assists in the operating room, or in other special procedures, as required, records brief operative or pre-procedure note.
Prescribes and/or administers oral or parenteral medication to inpatients or outpatients in accordance with state law, UMMHC policy, and as provided in the “Delineation of Privileges” and “Guidelines for Prescribing”, which area in place for each individual Physician Assistant and or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Supervising Physician.
Orders routine nursing care, diet orders, and orders for allied health services, including speech, respiratory, and physical therapy.
Completes patient discharge instructions and discharge summaries accurately; counsels patients and families; communicates with discharge planners and other agencies.
Maintains all required credentials, including stat licensure, state controlled substance registration, DEA registration, NCCPA certification, BLS, ACLS, and FCCS certification, as appropriate in each practice setting.
Accepts orientation and training assignments, when requested, providing leadership to students and junior colleagues; participates in clinical conferences, rounds, quality-control meetings, and clinical research, as appropriate in each practice setting.
Completes promptly all outstanding medical records as required by the needs of each clinical service.
Evaluates patients in outpatient clinics or in the Emergency Department, accurately documenting each encounter, and communicating with the Supervising Physician in accordance with UMMHC policy.
Provides emergency care, as required, according to BLS and ACLS protocols.
Demonstrates a commitment to on-going quality improvement; complies with institutional and department policies and procedures; complies with health and safety regulations; performs other similar and related duties as required and directed.
Complies with the policies and procedures of the UMMHC Affiliate Practitioner Residency (APR) Program in Critical Care.
Participates in the academic and training programs of the UMMHC APR Program in Critical Care; satisfactorily completes academic and research assignments, as determined by the Residency Program; accepts and satisfactorily discharges clinical assignments, as determined by the Residency Director and the Medical Director of the Residency Program.
Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
Attends a variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.
Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations.
Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
