UMass Memorial Health Care’s Cardiac surgery department http://www.umassmed.edu/surgery/ is focused on a service line approach to cardiovascular disease, with dedicated cardiac operating rooms, anesthesia, intensive care and step down units as well as shared clinic space. We are one of the few growing cardiac surgical practices in Central Massachusetts.
At UMass Memorial Medical Center, our Cardiac Surgery Program is a national leader in all aspects of cardiac surgery. We consistently rank among the top heart programs nationwide. Our Cardiac Surgery Program has achieved 3-stars (highest designation) in all three categories reported by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons – Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG), Aortic Valve Surgery (AVR), and CABG and AVR combined. Only 17 hospitals in the country have achieved this designation. It was also named one of the top 15 hospitals in the nation for cardiac surgery by Consumer Reports. Our outstanding team of cardiac surgeons performs greater than six hundred heart surgeries each year with excellent results. Currently, our division specializes in complex aortic surgery, advanced heart failure, and mechanical circulatory support surgery as well as complex valve procedures and all other aspects of adult cardiac surgery.
Qualified candidates must also be dedicated to resident and medical student education. An interest in cardiovascular research and endovascular & cardiac catheterization skills are also encouraged. Previous experience in a leadership role to assist with collaboration across disciplines and building a high-performance team are desirable. Salary and academic rank are commensurate with experience.
We have technologically advanced operating rooms. Post-op care is provided in our state-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (ICU) equipped with dedicated cardiac surgery intensivists, dedicated cardiac ICU nurses and eICU capabilities adding an extra level of specialized care for critically ill patients. In fact, our cardiac surgery team consistently receives high patient satisfaction scores.
Our cardiac surgeons provide comprehensive care for the following procedures:
- Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG)
- Repair and replacement of cardiac valves (including TAVR and MitraClip)
- Removal of cardiac tumors
- Placement of mechanical cardiac/ventricular assist devices
- Repair of aneurysms and dissections
- Surgical removal of pulmonary emboli
- Surgical correction of atrial fibrillation
- Surgical correction of Adult and congenital diseases of the aorta
