Position Summary:

This position is responsible for oversight and direction of nursing quality, safety, professional practice, and clinical informatics for Nursing within the Medical Center. Work in collaboration with Information Systems (IS), Nursing Leadership, Quality & Patient Safety and Clinical Enterprise leaders to plan, execute, and evaluate workflows and clinical information management for the Medical Center and UMMHC.

This position is also responsible for administrative leadership, direction and oversight for quality and regulatory compliance within the Department of Nursing. Work in collaboration with Nursing Leadership, Quality & Patient Safety, Regulatory and other Medical Center and system leaders to plan execute and evaluate workflows to improve patient outcomes and assure compliance with regulatory standards. Responsible for the administrative leadership, direction and oversight of professional development for the Department of Nursing, including internal and external continuing nursing education programs.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Execute and build strategy to get department of nursing to Zero Harm through High Reliability principles.
  2. Implement shared governance program through the development of a professional practice model that related to Zero Harm and High Reliability principles.
  3. Collaboration with and partnership with hospital and system quality programs in the development, design, and execution of the Clinical Center of Excellence.
  4. Responsible for assuring the clinical informatics program supports the strategic plan of the department and the practice of nursing.
  5. Provides leadership to the Department of Nursing in collaboration with the IS department to design, develop and implement clinical information systems and electronic medical records.
  6. Collaborates with Quality and Patient Safety to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  7. Responsible for the oversight of development and implementation of programs and processes that assure high quality, appropriate care that results in improved outcomes, patient satisfaction and reduced cost.
  8. Responsible for the Administrative Leadership of the coordination, facilitation, and oversight of the Nursing Department quality programs.
  9. Responsible for the Administrative Leadership of the coordination, facilitation, and oversight of the Nursing Department clinical educational program.
  10. Administrative Leadership responsibility for the oversight and direction of the nursing quality and regulatory compliance to support the strategic plan of the department and the practice of nursing.
  11. Collaborates with Quality and Patient Safety, Regulatory and Risk Management to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and CAPS.
  12. Promotes evidence –based practices and technologies to support the work of the nursing staff.
  13. Act as clinical lead for Health Information Technology (HIT) projects and teams. Foster the integration of efforts for system wide initiatives.
  14. Establishes and maintains effective communication within the Department of Nursing, and across the enterprise. Serve as a consultant/resource to committees or personnel responsible for implementing corrective action.
  15. Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of Quality Improvement/LEAN methodology in daily operations.
  16. Collaborates with the Chief Medical Information Officer and Medical Center Chief Quality Officer to develop the strategic plan for improving clinical information management.
  17. Assist in the development of goals and objectives; implement policies and procedures that support efficient departmental operations.
  18. Provide capital and operational budget recommendations relating to required IS equipment in the clinical areas. Manage activities to assure financial goals are met.
  19. Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.

 

Standard Management Level Responsibilities:

  • Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
  • Develops and recommends the budgets for the areas managed. Manages activities to assure financial goals are met.
  • Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.
  • Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.
  • Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
  • Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.
  • Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  1. Master’s degree in Nursing or BSN with master’s degree in information systems field.
  2. Licensed to practice Nursing in the State of Massachusetts required.

Preferred:

  • Doctoral degree in Nursing or related field.

Experience/Skill:

Required:

  1. Minimum of 5 years of nursing leadership experience within a hospital setting.
  2. At least 8 years of previous experience in informatics.
  3. Proven leadership ability to motivate and lead staff.
  4. Ability to plan, organize, and evaluate programs and analyze fiscal data.
  5. Must have excellent communication skills.
  6. Must possess a strong knowledge of clinical processes and operations in a large health care system.
  7. Knowledge of workflow, process redesign and change management.
  8. Experience in managing quality improvement initiatives.
