Position Summary:
Responsible for the overall functioning and management operations of the Cryopreservation Stem Cell laboratory, operating on a 24/7 basis.  Collaborates with the hospital labs and stem cell transplant teams for operational, quality assurance, and programmatic needs.  Supervisory staffing responsibilities may be at more than one location.
Position Qualifications:

CAR-T experience preferred

Equivalent to MT (ASCP) certification and minimum of six years laboratory experience, of which two years to include stem cell management experience in stem cell and cord blood.  Minimum of two years experience in a laboratory managerial/supervisory capacity.  Specialty certification in specific area of management highly desirable.  Knowledge of evaluation methodologies, data analysis, i.e., statistics, QC/proficiency testing, management skill, and related software package.  Demonstrated communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of hospital staff.SBB or Master Degree preferred.
Major Responsibilities:
Responsible for the development and maintenance of SOPs, general lab protocols, and for ensuring the technical training and competency development of technicians in the stem cell laboratory.  Oversees staff in performing duties relating to the receiving, processing, confirmatory testing, storage, and subsequent release of cord blood products. 
Oversees staff in performing functions involved in the preparation of products administered for hematopoietic transplantation for the UMMMC stem cell transplant program, including the receipt, processing, storage, and administration of autologous and allogeneic products collected at
UMMMC, receipt and appropriate processing, storage (if applicable) and administration of related or unrelated allogeneic products from other sites for administration to patients, and coordination of
processing and shipment of unrelated products collected at UMMMC and transported to other institutions for administration.
Oversees all functions and interactions involved with the Gift of Life Program.  Responsible for the development and maintenance of SOPs, general lab protocols, and for the technical training and competency development of technicians.  Ensures the competency of staff in performing duties relating to the receiving, processing, storing, confirmatory testing, and subsequent release of cord
blood products for the program.  Responsible for ensuring the mutually satisfactory record keeping, information and SOP exchange, and quality assurance activities for the Gift of Life program.
Ensures the maintenance of specific accreditation for agencies that oversee programs managed, including: FDA, FACT, NMDP, NY State Department of Health, as well as any general accreditations needed for the laboratory.
Plans, organizes, delineates and schedules duties and responsibilities of the laboratory.  Responsible for assuring appropriate training and continuing in-service training instruction of all staff.
Maintains communication and collaboration with the hospital labs and stem cell transplant teams at UMMMC for quality assurance and programmatic needs.
Manages quality and throughput of results; ascertains reliability of test results; provides assistance as needed, in troubleshooting and result interpretation.  Provides guidance in the interpretation and correlation of clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition in order to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken. 
Manages Quality Control, maintains equipment and procedure manuals and required records and reports.  Maintains and adjusts equipment and instrumentation to ensure reliable operation and optimal utilization.
Develops new test and quality procedures for assigned laboratory(s); assists in the roll-out of new equipment and equipment modifications.   Instructs technicians and technologists in the set-up and operation of new equipment and procedures.  Collaborates with the Quality Management Coordinator to implement programs and studies to meet the needs of the Hospital Laboratories and the Hospital objectives.
Communicates Department and Hospital policies and needs to technical and support personnel; provides assistance to Hospital personnel related to Hospital Laboratory policies, utilization and test interpretation.
Participates in continuing education to stay current with new developments in the field.
Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training.  Make recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions.  Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
Develops and recommends the budgets for the areas managed.  Manages activities to assure financial goals are met.
Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems.  Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.
Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.
Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.

Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.
Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.
