Position Summary:
 

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications, develops and manages a comprehensive media, public relations and social media program in support of the UMass Memorial Health system’s vision, and the strategic goals of the system and UMass Memorial Medical Center. Provides strategic public relations counsel, crisis communications planning/response, media inquiry response, and proactive outreach to ensure a positive and cohesive public image via social media and earned media channels.


Major Responsibilities: 
  • Leads a highly motivated and creative team of media and social media professionals, including establishing the strategy, and overseeing the coordination and execution of all public relations, media and social media activities.
  • Provides proactive, reactive and crisis media relations counsel to senior leadership, physicians, and others. Develops key messaging and strategies enabling these constituencies to interface appropriately with the media to advance the organization’s goals. Makes appropriate arrangements for interviews with health care system leadership and personnel.
  • Identifies newsworthy stories, researches, writes, places, and disseminates news releases, feature stories, photo releases, calendar announcements, and pitches to appropriate news media outlets.
  • Responds to media inquiries in a timely and accurate manner, in accordance with established procedures. Ensures department and system leadership are kept informed.
  • Keeps leadership informed of timely issues garnering media attention and organizes system representatives to respond proactively as determined appropriate.
Position Qualifications:
 
License/Certification/Education:
 
Required:
  •  Bachelor’s degree in related field.

Preferred:
  • Master’s degree.

Experience/Skill:

Required:

  • Minimum of 10 years related experience in media and public relations and marketing communications.
  • Prior leadership experience within a health care environment strongly preferred.
  • Solid understanding of media and public relations program development and communication strategy.
  • Familiarity in utilization of online social media resources (e.g., YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, blogs, etc.).
  • Superior writing ability and presentation skills required.
