Title: Lab & Pharmacy Compliance Officer

Position Summary:
Responsible for designing, monitoring and maintaining UMass Memorial Health Care’s (UMMHC) laboratory and pharmacy compliance programs, promote adherence to UMass Memorial policies and applicable federal and state law, and the program requirements of federal, state, and private health plans. This includes development, implementation and adherence to UMMHC’s policies and procedures addressing laboratory and pharmacy compliance. Works with leadership in laboratory, pharmacy, and other areas of the Organization to foster the developmental and operational elements needed to ensure appropriate laboratory and pharmacy compliance throughout the organization.  Plays an active role in the identification and implementation of operational change to ensure the integrity of laboratory and pharmacy coding, billing and associated documentation, laboratory test utilization, drug/medication oversight and other areas as required.  Provides reasonable assurance as to improve billing integrity through the monitoring and implementation of programs which promote appropriate laboratory test utilization in support of medical necessity initiatives.

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinates the planning and implementation of the laboratory and pharmacy compliance programs with the Laboratory and Pharmacy Compliance Committees and Leadership. Provides direction and acts as a resource for laboratory and pharmacy compliance at all UMass Memorial Member Entities.
  • Facilitates the UMMHC Laboratory and Pharmacy Compliance Committees and communicates regularly with the Laboratory and Pharmacy leadership at the member entities and with Chief Compliance Officers as necessary. Communicates with the Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer and UMMMC Senior Vice President for Operations and to the Laboratory and Pharmacy Compliance Committees on the status and direction of the laboratory and pharmacy compliance programs. Reports periodically and as necessary to Member Entity Executive Management Compliance Committees and/or Board Audit and Compliance Committees as appropriate.
  • Maintains current knowledge of laboratory and pharmacy compliance regulatory guidance and applicable Federal and State laboratory compliance laws and monitors changes to ensure organizational awareness at UMass Memorial member entities.
  • Facilitates and oversees the development and/or revision of training/policies and procedures for the laboratory and pharmacy compliance programs and ensures the effective communication of this information to member entities and vendors/ suppliers, as applicable.
  • Develops and works with appropriate UMass Memorial personnel to implement a comprehensive training and education program focusing on laboratory and pharmacy compliance. Ensures that appropriate workforce members receive education and training to assure compliance with laws and regulations and the disciplinary implications associated with violation of compliance policies and procedures. Coordinates this effort with system-wide compliance education and training programs.
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in a clinical laboratory as a Laboratory Supervisor or other Laboratory management position responsible for Laboratory Compliance and applicable regulations.
  • Familiarity with quality improvement processes and methodologies.
  • Ability to influence change and promote a sense of accountability and responsibility for laboratory and pharmacy compliance to management and staff.
  • Strong project management and interpersonal communication skills, written and oral.
  • Ability to apply computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and Internet use, to job-related responsibilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and independent decision-making capabilities.
  • Five (5) years of experience in a corporate compliance environment with direct or indirect responsibility for Pharmacy Compliance.
