Position Summary:

The Vice President, Benefits and Wellness is a key member of the Human Resource senior management team, reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO).

This role works in close collaboration with management within the HR Department and is a key member of the Sr. VP/CHRO’s core leadership team.

The Vice President, Human Resources is responsible for creating a positive and cohesive team culture and leading efforts to improve HR operations and service orientation across the entire UMMHC enterprise, including all hospitals and UMass Memorial Medical Group. 

The Vice President, Benefits and Wellness is responsible for leading operations across the system including benefits and wellness functions.

The Vice President, Benefits and Wellness works with the Sr. VP/CHRO in developing strategic human resources practices and policies to assist with the advancement of the strategic plan of the System.

The Vice President, Benefits and Wellness is responsible for ensuring the Benefits and Wellness functions are current, progressive, customer oriented, and establishes the UMMHC System as a preferred employer throughout the central Massachusetts region. 

Major Responsibilities:


Develop progressive and proactive benefits programs to support recruitment and retention of employees, executives, and physicians who are employed by the UMass Memorial Health

Ensures that all programs, practices, and policies are current and in compliance with applicable laws and regulatory changes.

Provides advice and counsel to individual hospital and System leadership regarding the application of compensation and benefit changes to keep pace with a competitive marketplace.                                                         

Staff/Team Development/Support:

Mentor and develop HR staff to ensure progressive and up-to-date knowledge, competency, customer focus, and support of the HR & System-wide mission.

Engage the HR leadership and employees and create a team and customer service-oriented HR culture.  

Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.

Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.

Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.                                                   


Develop and maintain annual operating and capital budgets for areas of responsibility.                                                                                                  

Maintain current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable laws regarding human resources.

Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training.  Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions.  Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.

Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.

Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc.  Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.

Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.

Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.

Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.

Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.

Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

All responsibilities are essential job functions.


Requires Master’s degree in Human Resources or related area.  A minimum of 10 years progressive senior leadership experience in human resources within a large academic medical center or multi-hospital health system is required.    Must have a thorough knowledge of state and federal employment regulations, labor law, collective bargaining, and OSHA regulations, as well as laws or regulations relating to pension administration, compensation, and benefits.  Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

A track record of success in human resource management in a unionized environment and proven experience with developing and executing a strong benefit strategy within a multi-union healthcare environment is required.

Must have a demonstrated track record implementing sustained operational improvements and building/ leading an effective, cohesive human resource team Ability to achieve excellent results through others is essential. 

Must have demonstrated experience in initiating proactive programs, leading process improvement efforts and building communication strategies.

Must have experience working collaboratively with leaders and staff at a variety of levels, demonstrating collaboration, inclusion, decisive decision making, and strong follow through skills.

Must effectively leverage resources to meet the demands of multiple and changing priorities.
