Position Summary:

This position is responsible for the non-physician coordination of a high quality multidisciplinary ECMO program to support current and future specialty services at UMass Memorial Medical Center. This position is also responsible for development and delivery of departmental employee in-service, education, and quality improvement programs.

Major Responsibilities: ECMO Coordinator
  • Provides clinical expertise and supervision while a patient is on ECMO. This will include collaboration and discussion with ECMO physicians as well as the patient’s primary care team, direct supervision of ECMO specialists at the bedside, as well as indirect supervision and support on an on-call basis.
  • Maintains accountability over the ECMO program.  
  • Coordinates and facilitates ECMO training for newly recruited “ECMO Specialists” in accordance with ELSO guidelines.  
  • This includes ongoing continuing education for ECMO Specialists.
  • Provides ECMO education for clinicians throughout the medical center including, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, faculty and resident physicians, physician assistants, and perfusionists.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed. This includes, performing the role of ECMO specialist, setting up and initiating ECMO support, and providing urgent or emergent circuit component change-out on an on-call basis.
  • Maintains relationships with various clinical services that support the ECMO program including pediatric critical care, adult critical care, cardiothoracic surgery, adult and pediatric general surgery, adult, and pediatric cardiology, and neonatology.
Major Responsibilities: Respiratory Educator
  • Develops and coordinates training programs and conducts in-service training and continuing education for intra/interdepartmental staff.
  • Plans and oversees new employee orientation including RT II, RT II ECMO. Ensures staff licensure, as well as credential and competency compliance.
  • Ensures that department complies with hospital-established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures. Assists with Joint Commission, State and Federal surveys.
Position Qualifications:
Required License/Certification/Education: 
  • Bachelor’s degree or currently working towards bachelor’s degree in respiratory care or other health care related curriculum.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with current BLS certification
  • Current registration by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) – Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential effective January 2017 for new hires. All employees are expected to comply with the NBRC’s Continuing Competency program and are required to provide evidence that they are continuing to meet current standards of practice and have successfully renewed their national credentials issued by the NBRC.
  • ACLS certification.
Preferred:
  • ELSO Certified as an ECMO Specialist.
  • AmSECT Certified as an ECMO Specialist.
Experience/Skills:
  • Previous ECMO experience.  
  • Minimum three years of adult critical care experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the specialized field of respiratory care.    
  • Demonstrated competency in interpersonal relationship skills, leadership ability, commitment to the organization and flexibility.
  • Experienced in building positive working relationships and facilitating high functioning teams.
  • Expert in “ELSO Guidelines” for ECMO programs and serves as a mentor and leader for staff in meeting ELSO standards. Serving as an effective educator is an essential aspect of this role.
  • Strong leadership capabilities through communication, education, and management. Will serve as a liaison between ECMO team and various clinical areas and teams throughout the medical center that utilize ECMO services.
