The Patient Care Assistant acts as a front line interface, by way of phone or in person to greet patients/family/visitors and performs both clerical and clinical duties as assigned in patient care areas.  Under the direction of the RN this position performs a variety of activities, tasks and services supporting the personal and comfort needs of various types of patients.


Job duties specific to this position:

  • Greets and directs visitors, and provides basic information on policies and procedures or direct requests to appropriate persons.
  • Answers phones promptly and assists with answering call lights.
  • Assists in maintaining the order, organization and currency of logs and records and patient charts. Helps ensure an efficient sharing of information within the unit.
  • Coordinates and transcribes information needed for a variety of patient services and treatment areas such as radiology, the laboratory, dietary, housekeeping.
  • Arranges for laboratory tests, radiology procedures, treatments for rehabilitative services such as physical therapy, etc.
  • Assists in maintaining proper inventory of standard supplies and materials.  Prepares requisitions to maintain established levels.
  • Prepares for new admissions and discharges by securing admission kits, chart labels, room labels, forms and checking rooms for readiness.  Assembles charts, adds patient’s name to census list, processes diet slip and other admission information.
  • Performs various routine clerical and computerized duties, such as sorting and faxing information and forms, maintaining files, records and logs, taking and relaying phone messages and routine information.  
  • Arranges for patient transport.
  • Keeps waiting areas, conference room and grief sitting areas organized and stocked with information.
  • Provides direct patient care in a safe sensitive, timely manner according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs skills and procedures specific to the role proficiently in accordance with departmental competencies and procedures. 
  • Assists and responds to the needs of a patient population to provide a comfortable and safe environment.  Duties may include, but are not limited to:
    • Responding to patients' call signals promptly, taking proper action and follow up.
    • Assisting with personal care (such as feeding, bathing, grooming, and dressing.)
    • Providing patient help with repositioning, walking, and moving into and out of bed.
    • Changing linens and cleaning rooms.
  • Supports the processes of patient care provided by the medical team by performing various duties including but not limited to:
    • Taking and recording vital signs in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. 
    • Observing, recording and reporting patients' conditions, food and liquid intake and output, collecting samples, and reporting changes to professional staff. 
    • Supplying and emptying bed pans, applying dressings, supervising exercise routines, etc.
    • Completes unit specific tasks, checklists, etc. as required.
  • Adheres to the principles of infection control in all aspects of the CNA role.
  • Completes unit/shift task lists as required.
  • Makes fiscally responsible actions with patient care needs, supplies and equipment.
  • Responds appropriately and immediately in emergency situations.
  • Complies with all department and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Participates in and completes all appropriate Hospital and department specific training requirements.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to act in a respectful and professional manner at all times even under stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, infection control guidelines, and sterile technique.
  • Ability to perform detailed assignments with minimal supervision and work under pressure.
  • Proficient in patient care communication skills.
  • Ability to use computer applications to record, reference and enter basic information accurately and promptly.  Also, the ability to learn new computer applications quickly. 
  • Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English.


High school diploma required.  Completion of a CNA course and the certifying exam.


Prior patient care experience desired.


CNA certification required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
