Why UMass Memorial Health
Everyone, Everyday.

At UMass Memorial Health, everyone is a caregiver. No matter their responsibilities or title, every employee or “caregiver” fills an important role for our patients and their families every day.
Who is a caregiver? It's not just the person who delivers the care. It's all the people who make it work … and make it better. Caregivers give everything that helps patients heal, from expertise to extra attention. They give clean, comfortable rooms. Fast, accurate answers. And an easier, less stressful experience. They give warm, reassuring smiles, and helping hands.
We are more than 16,000 employees, working together as one health system in a relentless pursuit of healing for our patients, our community and each other. And everyone, in their own unique way, plays an important part, every day.

Who We Are – Our Mission of Care

UMass Memorial Health is the health and wellness partner of the people of Central Massachusetts. Through pain and pandemics, our commitment to our communities never wanes. We use knowledge and innovation to create breakthrough medicine. To create jobs. To make life better for those we serve. We are leaders in the training of physicians and those who work in every facet of health care. We make outstanding care accessible for all, regardless of ability to pay. We stand for quality, compassion, dignity, opportunity and fairness. And we are relentless in our pursuit of healing.
At UMass Memorial Health, we also understand that a person's health isn't solely a result of seeing a doctor for a checkup once a year. While physical health care is a contributor, a person's overall health is dependent on many different factors – from having a home to live in, to having food on their table, to having a job and access to health care and education. As an Anchor Mission organization, we aim to improve the health and welfare of our community beyond our hospital's walls, particularly in those areas suffering pervasive inequality and social disadvantage.
Our Standards of Respect

How we interact with each other, our patients and their families makes a difference. That's why we created clearly defined expectations for how we will interact with each other at UMass Memorial Health. Our six Standards of Respect: Acknowledge, Listen, Communicate, Be Responsive, Be a Team Player and Be Kind, originated from a grassroots effort led by a group of dedicated caregivers seeking to establish how we wanted to treat our patients and one another. If you share these Standards of Respect, we hope you will join our team and help us make respect our standard for everyone, every day.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

At UMass Memorial Health, we embrace diversity in its many dimensions and leverage those differences to achieve our mission and drive outstanding results. Diverse groups are a powerful force who generate more ideas, make positive changes and help advance great organizations like ours. We are committed to prioritizing, representing and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in our planning, processes and everyday work as these efforts are essential to achieve our True North goal: to become the best place to give care and the best place to get care.
We are proud the be recognized by The Joint Commission and Kaiser Permanente with the inaugural Bernard J. Tyson National Award for Excellence in Pursuit of Healthcare Equity, an award that recognizes health care organizations leading initiatives that result in measurable, sustained improvements in health equity.
Our Culture of Innovation

At UMass Memorial Health, innovation is part of our DNA. It's how we look at problems and how we solve them. Our focus on continuous improvement – through ideas shared via idea boards, team huddles and our online Innovation Station platform – is how we strive to always do better, for our patients and clients, our community and our workplace.
Since 2013, our health system has implemented and celebrated more than 100,000 ideas (and counting!) from front-line caregivers. We hope you'll help us on our way to implementing the next 100,000 ideas!
