Why UMass Memorial Health
Everyone Is a Caregiver.
At UMass Memorial Health, everyone is a caregiver. No matter the responsibilities or title, every employee or “caregiver” fills an important role for our patients and their families every day.
Who is a caregiver? It’s not just the person who delivers the care. It’s all the people who make it work … and make it better. Caregivers give everything that helps patients heal, from expertise to extra attention. They give clean, comfortable rooms. Fast, accurate answers. And an easier, less stressful experience. They give warm, reassuring smiles, and helping hands. And they do so relentlessly.
We are more than 14,000 employees, working together as one health care system. And everyone, in their own unique way, plays an important part, every day.

Who We Are—Our Mission of Care
UMass Memorial Health is the health and wellness partner of the people of Central Massachusetts. Through pain and pandemics, our commitment to our communities never wanes. We use knowledge and innovation to create breakthrough medicine. To create jobs. To make life better for those we serve. We are leaders in the training of physicians and those who work in every facet of health care. We make outstanding care accessible for all, regardless of ability to pay. We stand for quality, compassion, dignity, opportunity and fairness. And we are relentless in our pursuit of healing.
Who We Strive to Be—Our Vision for the Future
As one of the nation's most distinguished health care systems, UMass Memorial Health will provide leadership and innovation in seamless health care delivery, education and research — all of which are designed to provide exceptional value to our patients. Through the work of everyone, every day, we will continue striving toward our True North mission of becoming the best place to give care and the best place to get care.
Standards of Respect
How we interact with each other, our patients and their families makes a difference. That’s why we created clearly defined expectations for how we will interact with each other at UMass Memorial Health. Our six Standards of Respect: Acknowledge, Listen, Communicate, Be Responsive, Be a Team Player and Be Kind, originated from a grassroots effort led by a group of dedicated caregivers seeking to establish how we wanted to treat our patients and one another. If you share these Standards of Respect, we hope you will join our team and help us make respect our standard for everyone, every day.
Diversity and Inclusion
In line with our Standards of Respect, we value the diversity and cultural backgrounds of both our patients and our caregivers. Diversity at UMass Memorial Health is an integral part of our core mission, values, strategy and key initiatives.
- Our commitment to diversity and cultural awareness includes a wide range of events and programs that help us shape our future through inclusion.
- Our diversity initiatives revolve around engagement, an inclusive academic learning environment, cultural education, community outreach and talent management.
Encouraging our caregivers to share and implement their ideas is another way we engage our staff and help us reach our True North goal: to become the best place to give care and the best place to get care. We’ve implemented over 75,000 ideas (and counting!) across our health system and we hope you’ll help us on our way to the next 75,000. At UMass Memorial Health, no idea is too big or too small to help make our organization the best place possible for our patients and our caregivers. Living in the Area
For the caregivers of UMass Memorial Health, Central Massachusetts is much more than a “service area.” It’s a place they’re proud to call home — the very heart of New England, featuring a resurgent Worcester and a surrounding ring of friendly suburbs.
Access the Education
Central Massachusetts has some of the strongest public-school systems in the nation. In addition to the 47 public schools and 20 private schools for primary and secondary education, Worcester is also home to 13 colleges and universities. This infusion of students, athletics, concerts, exhibitions and special performances put the city in a league of its own.
Explore New England
Worcester’s convenient location—minutes from the Mass Pike and I-495—offers caregivers and their families rapid access via highway and commuter rail to the history and excitement of Boston, the beaches of Cape Cod, and skiing and hiking in the Berkshires, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Green Mountains of Vermont.
Enjoy the Lifestyle
Beyond the city, Central Massachusetts offers caregivers and their families a wealth of rewarding lifestyle options. From such affluent suburbs as Hopkinton and Harvard to dozens of quiet, rural communities, the region presents a wonderful and varied range of settings — all at a fraction of the cost of living associated with the Boston area.
Things to Do in Worcester
Deemed the new “it” city, Worcester offers great diversity that contributes to the cultural vitality of the region. With world-renowned museums, concert halls, theaters and galleries, as well as diverse performing groups, ethnic festivals and artists of every discipline, you’ll always find something great to do and see in Worcester.
The Famous “Restaurant Row” on Shrewsbury Street and the annual Taste of Shrewsbury event have made Worcester a culinary destination, with over 100 restaurants opening in the past two years.
Festivals and Events
Farmers Markets, the Worcester Pride Festival, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Latin American Festival, the Festival of Lights and New England VegFest highlight some of the area’s best celebrations.
Much, Much More
Worcester also offers a burgeoning local shopping scene, over 62 parks, great transportation options including the Worcester Regional Airport, and a low cost of living.
