Ultra Communications Inc. - A Samtec Company is seeking an Electrical Engineering COOP in our Vista, CA location.
Please only apply if you are a student, currently enrolled and pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering with an electrical, mechanical or software emphasis or related field with optics emphasis at a local university within the San Diego County area.
Pay is $24-27.00 per hour, depending on education and experience level.
Co-ops are eligible to participate in student program tuition assistance and may also opt to participate in Samtec's 401k plan.
Samtec/UCI Optics Engineering Group is responsible for the design and development of high-speed fiber-optic transceivers. The Electrical Engineer/Signal Integrity COOP role will focus on the integrity of the high-speed electrical and optical signal paths, module- and board-level power integrity, ASIC and OE device selection, product PCB and substrate design, host PCB design, product bring-up, optoelectronic tuning, and engineering validation testing.
Ideal candidates are self-starters who demonstrate exemplary written and verbal communication skills. They excel in a dynamic environment and can problem solve, efficiently, creatively, and with fine attention to detail.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Current student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field in the San Diego area.
- Availability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during regular business hours while maintaining a full-time course load.
- You must be available to commit to a minimum of 3 semesters.
- Co-ops are required to maintain a C grade or above in all courses to maintain status in the program.
- Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Work schedule:
Full time co-op: 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday – Friday during school breaks
Part time co-op: Flexible but preferably within 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday – Friday
Objectives
- Develop problem solving skills--defining the problem, solving the problem, and communicating the problem and solutions.
- Develop an understanding of optoelectronic hardware requirements, development, testing, and validation.
- Modify/enhance existing hardware.
- Develop hardware for new and existing products.
- • Multimeter, power supply, oscilloscope, bit-error rate tester, optical power meter, VNA, spectrum analyzer
• PCB and substate design software (Allegro, Expert)
• Simulation software (HFSS, SIwave, SPICE)
• Analytical software (JMP, MATLAB)
• Software development (C, C#, Python)
• Microsoft Products (Outlook, Office, SharePoint, Teams)
- Using the above systems
- Fiber optic data transmission
- Specification and characterization of fiber-optic transceivers
- Optical / electrical / mechanical / thermal interactions
- Hardware-firmware interactions
- Signal integrity analysis
- Power integrity analysis
- Reading IC datasheets
- Board-level circuit design, fabrication, and test
- Hands-on lab experience, especially hardware and optics
- Experience with breadboarding circuits and using basic electronic test equipment
- Knowledge of analog and digital circuit design principles
- Knowledge of electronic and optoelectronic device principles
- Knowledge of optical and fiber-optic system principles
- Experience with embedded hardware (e.g., MCUs, I2C devices, serial communication)
- Experience with software development
- Strong background in physics, mathematics, and electrical engineering subject matter
