SDET, Data & Insights Solutions

Software Development United States

As a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) at Tyler Technologies, you will play a vital role in ensuring that our visionary data management, governance, analysis, and open data publication products work reliably and efficiently at Internet-scale, enabling key policy- and decision-makers to take data-informed actions that improve the communities they serve.

We are looking for an experienced, pragmatically minded, visionary leader to move our testing practices to the next level: increasing automation and integration with our DevSecOps pipeline, expanding test coverage, coaching and guiding other testers, and engaging with designers and product owners to ensure requirements are testable, with engineers to ensure their work can be tested, and with release managers so everyone is clear about what’s going out in upcoming releases and is ready to roll.

While focused on the future, you will need to be prepared to grab a pick-and-shovel, engaging in hands on-testing to support our releases while instituting change by example and through advocacy for improvements in practices and tooling.

The successful candidate for this position will:

  • Have a rich background in testing across a variety of current technologies.
  • Be driven to keep up to date on best practices, looking for new opportunities for relevant, practical application in our environment.
  • Be prepared to engage at strategic- and operational-levels, simultaneously.
  • Be detail-oriented and broad-minded.
  • Know how to advocate successfully for change and not be afraid to have collaborative, hard conversations looking to balance the organization’s long-term interests with short-term needs.
  • Understand the critical importance of defining quality metrics with stakeholders, determining how to collect them, and communicating risk and success based on key indicators.
  • Ideally, have been in a leadership testing position, previously, but willing to dig in and grow your influencing and engagement skills along with your testing skills, regardless.

You should be experienced and confident with (or at least keenly interested in):
  • Very comfortable working in a large Ruby codebase.
  • Writing and maintaining automated Ruby tests – our suite uses RSpec/Capybara/Selenium.
  • Bash, zsh, or other similar Unix command line tool.
  • Git/GitHub.
  • HTTP protocol and familiarity with REST APIs (and clients for testing ie: cURL or Postman).
  • Black box testing using browsers’ JS consoles.
  • Writing clear test plans that other team members can follow.
  • Manual testing, when the situation calls for it.
  • Ability to pass a federal background check required
Bonus points if you have familiarity with:
  • Selenium
  • Capybara
  • RSpec
  • Familiarity with CI tools (we happen to use Jenkins)
  • Performance/load testing
  • SQL and/or No-SQL
  • Grey box, white box testing
