NIC Utah is currently seeking applicants for a AWS Developer to assist in the successful implementation of web-based applications and services for state and local government partners.


We are looking for an experienced AWS Developer responsible for making our app more scalable and reliable. We are currently running our services using API Gateway, Lambda, EC2 and RDS. We are looking at improving our monitoring stack to provide metrics for service capacity planning. We are also looking at upgrading our CI/CD pipeline and using CloudFormation and CDK automation of deployments. Many of our existing applications are built using Java and the Spring Framework. This position will be key in help us migrate these applications to the cloud, so any experience with Java and Spring Framework will be valuable.


  • Understand the current application infrastructure and suggest new concepts to improve efficiency
  • Develop different microservices on AWS, including API Gateway, Lambda, and RDS to build secure, serverless applications
  • Define and document best practices and strategies regarding application deployment and infrastructure maintenance
  • Migrate our infrastructure with zero downtime to a highly available, scalable one
  • Set up a monitoring stack
  • Define service capacity planning strategies
  • Implement the application’s CI/CD pipeline using the AWS CI/CD stack
  • Write infrastructure as code using Cloud Formation or similar


  • Experience with the core AWS services, plus the specifics mentioned in this job description
  • Good background in Linux administration
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Strong notions of security best practices (e.g. using IAM Roles, KMS, etc.)
  • Experience with monitoring solutions such as CloudWatch or Prometheus
  • Previous exposure to large-scale systems design
  • Ability to troubleshoot distributed systems
  • Knowledge of writing infrastructure as code (IaC) using Cloud Formation or Terraform
  • Experience with building or maintaining cloud-native applications
  • Experience with the AWS Serverless Application Model (SAM) is a plus
  • Proficiency in Java development using Spring Framework is a plus
