Database Administrator, Part time and 2nd Shift

Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Database Administrator (DBA) to join our dynamic Hosting team. This is a part-time job. The DBA will be responsible for managing and supporting our database systems during the 2nd shift (typically 3 PM – 9 PM – Tuesday – Friday and 8 AM – 12 PM Saturday. This role involves after-hours deployment support, monitoring, maintaining, and optimizing the performance, security, and availability of our databases while ensuring efficient backup and recovery procedures. There is potential for this position to evolve into a full-time role based on performance and business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Database Management: Administer, maintain, and optimize databases to ensure high performance, availability, and security.
  • Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Continuously monitor database performance, address issues, and resolve database-related problems in a timely manner.
  • Backup & Recovery: Ensure proper backup and disaster recovery procedures are in place and operational. Execute backups during the shift and perform restoration testing.
  • Performance Tuning: Analyze and optimize database queries, indexing, and configurations to improve system performance.
  • Security Management: Implement security measures and user access controls to safeguard database systems and sensitive data.
  • Maintenance: Apply patches, updates, and perform routine database maintenance to keep systems current and secure.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation of database configurations, changes, and incidents.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other IT team members, including developers and network engineers, to ensure smooth database integration and functionality with other systems.
  • Support: Provide second-line support for database-related issues, ensuring issues are resolved quickly and efficiently.
Technical Skills
  • Strong knowledge of database management, administration, performance tuning, and optimization.
  • Familiarity with backup and recovery tools, disaster recovery procedures, and high availability setups.
  • Knowledge of SQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and database scripting.
  • Understanding of security practices in database environments.
  • Experience with cloud-based databases (AWS RDS, Azure SQL, etc.)
  • Familiarity with automation and scripting (PowerShell, Python, etc.)
  • Certification in database administration (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator, Oracle Certified Professional) is a plus

Qualifications

  • Experience: 2+ years of experience as a Database Administrator (DBA), with a strong focus on relational database management systems (RDBMS), such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and/or Oracle.
  • Communication: Strong communication skills to collaborate with team members and document issues and solutions clearly.
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve database-related issues under pressure.
  • Availability: Must be available to work 2nd shift hours (typically 3 PM – 9 PM – Tuesday – Friday and 8 AM – 12 PM Saturday and be flexible with schedule adjustments if needed.
Requirements
  • Must be US Citizen and located within the CONUS.
  • Existing or active security clearance or must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
