Position Summary:

The Development Manager is responsible for leading and managing a team of software developers and supporting them in building industry leading, robust, high quality software solutions that are fit for purpose. They will help develop a strategy for the team to meet Trupanion’s corporate strategy and objectives, and to improve the quality of the service it delivers internally and externally. This position will plan and monitor the successful implementation of this strategy, and will be responsible for the quality and technical approach taken by team members, ensuring it is aligned to Trupanion’s corporate strategy, and that projects are delivered on time and on budget. They will create and maintain a professional, supportive, inclusive culture within the team, where individuals take ownership and accountability, and where they are fastidious and proud of delivering excellence and quality.

This is a fully remote position open to candidates anywhere in the UK. Candidates who prefer an in-office option may choose to work a hybrid schedule out of our Altrincham office.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Team leadership, strategy and planning

  • Lead and manage a team of in-house and remote software developers across different time zones. Line management responsibilities will include technical recruitment, 1-on-1 reviews, goal setting, identifying training needs, motivating, engaging, and performance-managing the team.
  • Drive the strategic direction of our products considering emerging and legacy technologies, oversee the development strategy for our products and platforms from definition to implementation.
  • Devise a tactical plan which can be collaboratively carried out by the team, to implement improvements to our products, processes and knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Plan for team growth considering the blend/level of skills required with the team, assist in resourcing decisions, coach and performance manage where necessary.
  • Review project progress and overview of the performance of all individuals in the team.
  • Facilitate the smooth delivery of all projects, enhancements and support delivery by the team.
  • Make sure team members have the latest in-depth knowledge of all decisions on projects or enhancements that they make.
  • Facilitate technology and methodology decision making through the team, including standardisation of system architecture, reusable libraries, tooling versions, and build and deployment processes.
  • Have a clear task list and plan for inducting new team members into the team and bring them up-to-speed as quickly as possible.
  • Make sure that all training and support that team members require is delivered internally or externally.

Software Development

  • Keep up to date with the latest software development technologies and methodologies
  • Drive consistent standards and approaches throughout the team
  • Write clean, structured, and well-documented code, deliver code which is well tested and consistently error-free
  • Build future-proof reusable core libraries to drive further efficiencies throughout the team
  • Design and build database schemas with integrity and scalability with data access layers that are optimised for performance and security

Communication and problem solving

  • Use your experience when reviewing and auditing code
  • Assist in critical support issues where your experience is required to ascertain the issue quickly and to find the more appropriate resolution
  • Take control over critical support instances, putting into place the correct escalation and process to manage and resolve issues as soon as possible
  • Contribute regularly to discussions regarding internal processes and system improvements to ensure maximum efficiency across the company, including technical solutions to problems
  • Instigate cross-team ideas and initiatives
  • Make sure the development team are integrating other teams’ services efficiently and that they are offering technical input into how all Trupanion Inc. services and products can be delivered and improved
  • Strive to ensure that processes and appropriate levels of knowledge are shared between teams
  • Make sure that any reports are written adhering to company brand/template, are clear and of a professionally high standard

Technical Support

  • Lead and oversee all technical quotes, analysis, specifications to make sure they are complete and accurate
  • Support the business development team with pre-sale activities, contributing to RFPs where appropriate and assisting in pitches to potential clients where needed
  • Provide training and workshops for team members as required

Company best practice, standards and compliance

  • Define and enforce development and coding standards using appropriate linting, scanning and reporting tools
  • Ensure Trupanion and its developers are compliant with all relevant security standards (e.g. OWASP) to maintain and support PCI DSS, ISO and other certifications
  • Design and implement development policies and procedures and ensure they are followed, including (but not limited to) ISO, PCI DSS and Trupanion test/release processes
  • Stay aware of the latest data protection and security threats and to make sure we mitigate against known industry standards and keep team members abreast of these threats.
  • Ensure your teams help other team members to develop, gain a strong understanding of the Trupanion business including the corporate and departmental goals
  • Efficiently manage your workload and accurately record your time using the company time recording system.
  • Make sure your team completes their time recording consistently and accurately
  • Ensure your knowledge of software development is kept up to date and relevant by networking/researching/reading blogs and news sources/training courses.
  • Freely share knowledge, insight, best practice and ideas

Innovation and research and development

  • Proactively drive innovation with new ideas and options made available by new technologies
  • Maintain and actively contribute to a list of innovation & research projects
  • Assist by offering strategic and technical advice for anyone working on these projects
  • Implement and monitor ongoing strategies to enable us to deliver quality and excellence through robust testing, and policies that are balanced and appropriate to the scope of project being delivered.
  • Foster a focus on excellence across the development team

Qualifications

Experience, Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • A senior level software developer with strong and successful technical lead experience
  • Experience of leading a team of in-house and remote developers across different time zones
  • Advanced level (knowledge and experience) of programming languages and methodologies, including C#/.NET
  • Experience of managing, directing and motivating team members to deliver projects with stretching scope and objectives
  • Highly numerate and literate, with the ability to produce top quality written specifications and strategy and implementation communication
  • Proactive and highly organised, with strong time management and planning skills
  • Able to meet tight deadlines and remain calm under pressure
  • Experience at advising key stakeholders across the Trupanion business
  • Experienced in leading teams, both as a tech lead and personnel manager
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the business analysts, program managers, business leaders, and SMEs to ensure solutions meet business needs
  • Experience with source control systems, release management, and source code configuration control for web projects
  • Proficient with the Agile methodology

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science or other technical discipline
