Purpose and Importance of Position

Riverstone are looking for a talented senior database administrator, working within the wider Systems Engineering Team. The role will be aimed at providing both on-going support of current services, but also developing a longer-term plan of database rationalization and migration to the cloud over the next few years.

 

There are currently a range of database services that need to be maintained and administered in relation to business needs and standard SQL functions. This includes the proactive monitoring and remediation of issues, along with processing business requests around the use of the data. Longer term, Riverstone would like to migrate all workloads to the cloud, and part of this role would be working with the wider IT teams to determine how this can be done, and what services will required.

Essential Functions

  • Provide support to the business in terms of database services, including:
    • Proactive monitoring of SQL services
    • Implement best-practice maintenance routines
    • Define manual & automation processes for data copies and extractions
    • Ensure valid backup solutions are in place & maintained
    • Provide support to wider IT teams around database design & function
    • In line with development teams, rationalize database services and update legacy technologies
  • Work on assigned projects as dictated by team and department leads
  • Partake in team training sessions, where appropriate
  • Provide documentation around configured systems & processes
  • Contribute to the Systems Engineering agile planning sessions, including definition of work items
  • Liaise with 3rd party vendors for configuration & support of supplied services

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in working with Microsoft SQL 2008 2019
  • Ability to define, implement, and manage backup strategies for production & non-production workloads
  • Ability to define, implement, and manage best practice database configurations, including re-indexing and server configuration
  • Ability to work with the wider IT teams in relation to database configuration & setup, particularly where in-house developed applications are in use.
  • Ability to problem solve complex and/or new issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Effective time management skills
  • Capable of working both individually and co-operatively as part of a team

 

Whilst not a requirement of the role, any experience within the Azure cloud services related to database management would be considered a benefit, including any type of disaster recovery solution. Such services include:

  • Azure SQL Managed Instances
  • Azure SQL Databases
  • Azure IaaS based MsSQL instances

 

Further to the above activities, there is the ability to be involved in projects outside the normal DBA realm if desired, including networking, server configuration and deployment of Azure services.

Experience

  • 4+ years working in a similar position

Required Education

Four-year (Bachelor’s) degree in Information Technology or related field.

Additional equivalent years of experience in Information Technology can be substituted for degree.

Preferred Education or Certification

Formal training/certification in database administration.

Travel

Minimal travel required, based upon business needs.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

This position operates in a professional, collaborative environment, and the applicant must have the ability to timely produce thorough, accurate work with many competing demands, deadlines, and distractions. The position uses standard equipment such as phones, computers, copiers/printers and filing cabinets. Noise level is moderate.

Teamwork: Whilst the role will require the ability to work on your own, as there are multiple members of the Systems Engineering team, the ability to work within a team is essential, as well as collaborating with other departments for project & support based items.

Organized: The applicant will need to be able to work on multiple items within a set time period and therefore will need to be organized in terms of being able to allocate time to the various work items in-flight. This will include scheduled project work & priority support items that may be urgent.

Effective Communicator: The applicant must be able to communicate effectively, at all levels of the business & with users of various technical ability. Communications may be written or verbal, so the ability to communicate via both methods is a requirement.
