Summary
:   Travis Credit Union’s (TCU) Legal Counsel provides in-house legal support across the enterprise to business stakeholders. This role manages and supports TCU stakeholders by providing practical legal advice and recommendations on day to day legal issues, enabling TCU to meet its business objectives consistent with the credit union's risk tolerance. In addition to any of the items below, it is anticipated that this position will take a lead role in strengthening Travis's vendor management program.

Profile:  

  • Provides legal and regulatory compliance guidance to the credit union regarding business law, corporate governance, complex transactional matters, litigation, employment law, insurance matters, third-party contracts, sales, purchasing and distribution agreements, and all other corporate legal matters.
  • Generates the legal perspective for the credit union’s strategic vision.
  • Responsible for the management/coordination of TCU litigation.
  • Serves to protect our trademarks and brand.
  • Analyzes contractual or legal impact on the credit union and provides guidance to effectively manage and mitigate TCU legal risks.  
  • Manages credit union legal filings as necessary to meet local, state and federal requirements.
  • Negotiates, writes and executes agreements and contracts on behalf of the company.
  • Oversees management of lawsuits involving the credit union as plaintiff or defendant. Prepares cases to pursue legal action (such as, cases that involve bankruptcies, collections, lender liability, employment disputes, and others).
  • Assists outside counsel with the representation of the credit union in all variety of actions. Acts as a point person for correspondence with external legal counsel and keeps current with credit union legislation, regulations, judicial and other legal developments and trends.
  • Drafts business communication and correspondence, reports, or other written materials.
  • Researches and anticipates unique legal issues that could impact the credit union.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and court procedures.
  • Knowledge of financial institution operations and sound understanding of compliance-related requirements under state and federal law.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal concepts and methodologies as well as their application in a financial environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal reference sources including Westlaw and/or other commonly used legal research platforms and methods sufficient to locate and analyze pertinent statutes, decisions, regulations, legal opinions, and other authorities.
  • Strong research and analytical skills that demonstrates effective organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Precise attention to detail, proofreading skills and advanced problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and effectively handle and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced work environment with minimal supervision.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office products. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and SharePoint).
  • Ability to organize applicable team timelines and follow up with internal and external customer needs.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of staff.
  • Must maintain a collaborative approach and foster positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Reporting and Experience

  • Reports directly to the General Counsel.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Juris Doctorate degree and a minimum of 6 years of related or analogous experience, including experience as house counsel or in areas such as employment, transactions, lending, financial institutions, litigation, collections, or bankruptcy.
  • Must be a member in good standing of the State Bar of California.

Starting salary is commensurate with experience. In addition to our competitive benefits, this opportunity with Travis Credit Union has a range of: 

  • Salary Range:  $172,627.35 - $213,245.55
