| The Sterile Processing Assistant plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of medical equipment and environmental spaces within the department. This position focuses on the cleaning, decontamination, and organization of equipment, as well as the organization of supplies and maintaining clean storage areas. The role ensures compliance with safety and quality standards to prevent the spread of infection and to support clinical operations. |
Core Competencies |
- Makes daily rounds to floors and department to pick up soiled instruments and equipment
- Cleans and disinfects soiled equipment thoroughly
- Checks equipment to determine proper functioning and notifies appropriate person to resolve any issues identified.
- Monitors washer/disinfectors and other equipment for proper functioning and reports malfunctions to appropriate person.
- Maintains knowledge in cleaning, CDPH and Joint Commission regulatory standards, identifies any gaps or deficiencies and reports
immediately for correction
- Adheres to and demonstrates ability to follow policies and procedures related to cleaning.
- Cleaning & Decontamination of Equipment: Thoroughly clean and disinfect medical instruments, tools, and equipment following
established protocols and infection control standards. Performs manual and machine cleaning of equipment, ensuring they are free from debris and contamination. Inspect and verify that all equipment is in good working condition before being processed for sterilization.
- Environmental Cleaning: Maintain a clean and organized environment in sterile processing areas, including floors, workspaces, and
high-touch surfaces. Follow specific procedures for cleaning and disinfecting environmental areas, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines. Report any issues related to cleaning supplies, tools, or environmental hazards to the supervisor.
- Breakdown of Pallets: Safely break down incoming shipments, including pallets, boxes, and packaging. Sort and organize medical
supplies, equipment, and consumables for further processing or storage. Ensure proper handling and disposal of packaging materials and non-sterile items, adhering to safety protocols.
- Storage Area Maintenance: Organize and maintain inventory in sterile areas, ensuring that all items are properly labeled, stored, and
easily accessible. Monitor stock levels, report shortages, and ensure that all items are stored according to manufacturer and safety guidelines. Ensure storage areas are clean, organized, and compliant with infection control and regulatory standards.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, infection control procedures, and regulatory standards in all aspects of the role.
Follow guidelines for personal protective equipment (PPE) usages and ensure adherence to workplace health and safety standards. Report any safety hazards or equipment malfunctions to the appropriate personnel immediately.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with other sterile processing staff to ensure efficient workflow and prompt turnover of sterilized
equipment. Assist in any additional tasks as needed to support the overall operation of the sterile processing department.
