|The Oncology Genetic Counselor, under the auspices of the Hunt Cancer Institute, works closely with medical providers to provide clinical cancer genetic services to patients and families at high risk of hereditary cancer. The genetic counselor functions with in-depth knowledge and competence to assess and counsel cancer patients and their families regarding genetic risks and the need for genetic testing. The genetic counselor provides genetic counseling to persons diagnosed with cancer and their families from the young adult, middle adult to the geriatric patients across the continuum of care. |
;The Genetic Counselor coordinates, administers, and delivers medical genetics counseling services to patients and families. The Genetic Counselor performs all duties in a manner which promotes team concept and reflects the mission and values of the Hunt Cancer Institute at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. The genetic counselor serves as a liaison within the multi-disciplinary team of physicians and patients and their families. The genetic counselor ensures that cancer patients receive timely, optimal, seamless quality care across the continuum.
|Serves as a liaison with nursing and medical staff regarding genetic testing results and counseling.|
|Analyzes problems and solutions and works collaboratively with members of the health care team, patients and families to determine best outcomes.|
|Utilizes laboratory results, develops pedigrees based on family history and determines clinical options.|
|Obtains detailed family history to develop genetic risks of developing cancer and determining need for genetic testing and provide counseling to patients regarding their result s in a professional manner ensuring that tall key physicians are informed.|
Department Specific Competencies
|• Master of Science or Master of Arts in Genetic Counseling conferred by a genetic counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.|
;• Board eligible/Board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
;• Current California State Genetic Counselor license or ability to obtain California State licensure
;• Current certification or eligibility of certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
;• Approved for Medicaid reimbursement, maintain privileges at local hospitals and maintain licensure/certifications
