Description

Under minimal supervision, sets up and operates various types of respiratory care equipment to be utilized in the treatment and diagnosis of respiratory diseases and/or illnesses. Acts as shift leader when delegated by supervisor. Is a resource person for the medical staff, nursing department and other pulmonary services staff. Emphasis at this level is on assurance of quality respiratory care, guidance and direction of other Pulmonary Services staff. The Level III assists with the development of Policies and Procedures, and represents the department at interdepartmental meetings/committees when delegated.

Core Competencies

  • Explains purpose and procedure of treatment, tests, and equipment to the patient, and family using AIDET.


  • Administers respiratory care as prescribed by physicians for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, as assigned, including, but not limited to, metered dose inhalers, hand held nebulizers, various oxygen therapy devices, chest physiotherapy, nasal, oral, and tracheal suctioning, mechanical ventilation set-up and maintenance, stabilizing and maintaining artificial airways, and instructing patients in effective cough and breathing techniques.


  • Participates as a member of the cardio-pulmonary resuscitation team.

  • Performs arterial punctures, arterial line draws, and blood gas analysis utilizing the blood gas analyzer. Reports and documents critical values appropriately. Demonstrates competency for pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical phases of blood gas analysis, assessed at 6 months and annually thereafter.

  • Performs preventative maintenance and quality control studies on blood gas analyzer when assigned.


  • Documents all respiratory care services provided to a patient in HIS, including the type of therapy, date and time of administration, effects of therapy, and any adverse reactions.


  • Assists physicians in therapeutic and diagnostic bronchoscopies after competencies have been established.

  • Assesses all patients for appropriateness of therapy, documents care plans, and consults with physicians regarding the plan of care.


  • Educates patient and/or family members regarding respiratory home care, pre-operative therapy, and disease states utilizing the Torrance Memorial Teaching Tools.

  • Communicates care provided and patient’s status to oncoming shift, using SBAR.

  • Ensures respiratory equipment is in proper working order, intervenes appropriately when unsafe conditions are identified, and observes all safety and infection control guidelines, performing decontamination, sterilization, and assembly of equipment when necessary.

  • Ensures proper storage and inventory control of equipment in assigned area.

  • Assumes shift leadership duties when assigned by Manager which include: assigning workload at the beginning of the shift, coordinating and guiding staff throughout shift, assessing workload and staffing for the oncoming shift per department guidelines, reassigning patient care during the shift to accommodate changes in patient condition/census, and assuring all staff have completed all tasks, EMARs PRN response and pending ABGs

  • Uses innovative problem solving skills in dealing with complex/challenging situations involving staff, patients, family, and visitors.

  • Manages patient care equipment, supplies and services in a cost efficient manner.

  • Provides early and rapid interventions for potentially unstable patients, ie; Code Blue, RRT, Condition H, etc

  • Contributes to department cohesiveness by assisting co-workers and being readily available to act as a resource for all staff.

  • Participates in the initial implementation of new processes and supports the staff and leadership team in making the transition successful.

  • Orients, trains, and competency assesses staff when assigned.

  • Attends management training classes through TMU or classes offered outside the hospital to gain leadership skills.

  • Shares information gained from seminars/conferences attended, once annually, during a staff meeting.

  • Provides meal and break relief in order to avoid overtime, double time and meal premiums while maintaining staff coverage for patients.

  • Leads the Power Minute and Safety Huddles daily when assigned in the Lead role.



Department Specific Competencies

  • Acts as a resource person for the medical staff, department of nursing and department personnel.

  • Assists with the development and updating of department policies to ensure compliance with Joint Commission, National Patient Safety Goals and other regulatory agencies.

  • Coordinates orientation of respiratory care students to the facility.

  • Assists with the annual competency evaluation of subordinate staff.

  • Participates in a minimum of one Process Improvement project per year.

Additional Information
Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care Program.

Experience


Additional Information
2 years lead therapist experience, 1 year adult critical care experience.

Compensation Range: 

$40.24 - 65.12/hr
