Financial Counselor
Description
Under general supervision, the Financial Counselor is responsible for assisting patients in resolving their medical liabilities, assisting patients in applying for financial assistance, helping them identify a path toward resolving their balances and identifying other funding sources (Medi-cal), Qualifying Acts of Violence, Workers Compensation, and etc.) and/or charity care. This role involves communicating with patients both in person and over the phone and requires a high level of customer service. |
- Screens, schedule appointments and coordinates assignments of accounts to Health Advocates for determination of Medi-cal, Social Security, Qualifying Acts of Violence and Workers Compensation Benefits..
- Reviews and processes applications for patients who are applying for charity care/assistance programs; verifies patient information and documentation and works to identify funding sources.
- Works with patients and families to communicate eligibility requirements and follows up to obtain missing documentation needed to complete applications..
- Ensures that applications are screened and processed accurately, efficiently, and within specified timeframes for applicable programs.
- Regularly follows up on the status of applications to identify any barriers and works to resolve issues, provides letter of determination to approved patients..
- Initiates collections attempt on arranged payment plans or services/flat-fees that were discounted.
- Logs, documents, and maintains monthly charity care activity statistics; reconciles data and ensures complete and accurate record-keeping; regularly submits charity care data to business office manager.
- Organizes, files, and maintains charity care applications to ensure appropriate access for organization staff and external auditors as necessary.
- Performs presumptive charity care eligibility screening on all accounts with potential for bad debt placement, in accordance with organization criteria for presumptive charity care.
