The Advanced Clinical Nurse Educator (Advanced CNE) is an advanced practice nurse who works independently with in-depth knowledge and competence in the assigned specialty area(s) to provide clinical leadership for staff. This position is involved in process improvement activities, and includes responsibilities aimed at fostering optimal wellness for a specific patient population. Toward this goal, the Advanced CNE implements the role components of educator, consultant, expert practitioner/role model, and makes recommendations for hiring, counseling, firing special training orientees within the specialty area. The Advanced CNE is responsible for developing, evaluating and coaching the special training orientees, maintaining quality nursing practice of all nursing personnel with the specialty area, and achieving accepted patient care standards in the assigned area(s).

;The Advanced CNE recommends staffing patterns based on changing patient, and community needs and practice. The Advanced CNE provides written evaluation of performance of nursing personnel to the unit manager as necessary. A commitment also exists to further develop, expand, and define the profession of nursing through linkage of nursing theory, research, and practice as well as political awareness and participation, professional presentations, and collaboration with nursing and other professional colleagues. Emphasis in this position is placed on facilitating problem solving in clinical practice and professional development of nursing personnel through independent action, direction and consultation with nursing management

  • Assists nursing personnel to identify professional and technical learning needs. Using discretion and independent judgment, frequently compares and evaluates performance and conduct of their students and clinical nursing personnel in their assigned area(s) of clinical expertise. Acts on each situation as appropriate including coaching, counseling, and consulting with management to achieve appropriate performance and behavior.

  • Plans and teaches formal and informal professional education programs, including but not limited to seminars, inservices, case conferences, self-directed learning programs and computer assisted instruction.

  • Assists new nursing personnel to achieve baseline competence, maintain competence of experienced nurses, and promote advancement within the clinical levels.

  • Identifies the needs of high-risk populations and plans and/or participates in educational programs to meet those needs.

  • Evaluates special training orientees as well as coordinates/teaches special training programs as needed within the assigned area(s).

  • Assesses, implements and evaluates educational programs addressing health needs for the patient/client, the family and the community.

  • Approves programs for continuing education units (CEUs), assuring adherence to guidelines established by the California Board of Registered Nurses.

  • Consults with and evaluates patients/families who are referred by medical staff, nursing staff, CNS colleagues, nurse directors or other disciplines for development and implementation of the nursing process regarding low volume , high risk, and challenging clinical cases.

  • Makes rounds with nursing personnel on select patients to clarify complex patient problems/foci, identify intervention options, and implement and evaluate an appropriate course of action.

  • Consults with nurse colleagues and other disciplines in education, research and clinical practice issues.

**Recent clinical experience is defined as the last two years of full-time experience or its equivalent as an RN in an acute care setting.

Compensation Range: 
$52.45 - $85.85 / hour
