Description

The Staff RN uses the nursing process to deliver nursing care to a given patient care population as it relates to the care setting. Nursing care is based on the interpretation and execution of the medical and nursing plan of treatment utilizing established procedures standards and protocols of individuals within the assigned work shift. The Staff RN provides nursing care to the population served in the unit.

Demonstrates understanding of the range of treatment needs according to the age of patients served. Gathers all information for admitting and preparing patients for surgical procedure. Possesses knowledge and skills of the care of patients undergoing anesthesia, including pre-anesthesia testing, pre-operative education, and pre-anesthesia assessments, to include patient's physical and psychosocial needs prior to surgery. Demonstrates competency in effective patient hand-off (SBAR). Possess knowledge and skills of the care for patients undergoing different types, phases of anesthesia, anesthetic drugs and adjuncts, medications and herbal compatibilities and associated anesthesia risks.
Transports and moves patients to appropriate departments post procedure using appropriate body mechanics and safety precautions. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of safe patient handling devices.
Manages coagulation of patient accurately, pre, intra and post procedure.
Provides appropriate procedural explanation, pre, intra and post procedure.
Administers sedatives, monitors the patients response and provision of necessary physiological support for a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure.
Assists in transporting patients to appropriate departments post operatively and post procedure.
Collects and analyzes patient data to regulate fluid/electrolyte and acid-base balance and prevention of complications from imbalances.
Collects and analysis's patient data to ensure airway patency and adequate gas exchange.
Assist with intubation.
Maintains ventilated patient during procedure.
Assesses for respiratory response to contrast.
Assess and intervene appropriately when the patients hemodynanic or respiratory status deteriorates.
Interprets ABGs and intervenes based on results and physicians orders.
Interprets diagnostic information obtained during procedures and communicates/assesses/intervenes appropriately, ie, hemodynamic parameters, pressure wires, ECG interpretation.
Understands pathophysiology related to a patient with imbalance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand resulting in impaired cardiac function.
Assesses and intervenes based on patients signs and symptoms, correlated diagnostic test results.
Sets up equipment for procedures performed in Cath Lab.
Understands indications for procedural interventions and how these interventions alter patient pathophysiology, thus changing patient plan of care.
Administers vasoactive drugs, antiarrhythmic and other cardiac and emergency medications.
Assists with the insertion of the IABP.
Monitors patient and maintain IABP and titrate drips as needed.
Exhibits knowledge of indication, application and use of pacemakers, external, transcutaneous and permanent when applicable.
Administers multiple amount of blood products as ordered and as appropriate.
Adheres to infection control guidelines: washes hands according to policy/procedure observes isolation policies cleans equipment according to directions between patients ensuring appropriate time and contact with disinfectants disposes of infectious waste properly
Removes arterial line post procedure per order. (* per standardized procedure. See competency)
Maintains a sterile field throughout each procedure.
Recovers patients post procedure according to policy and procedure.
Minimizes apprehension, dread, foreboding or uneasiness related to the treatment/procedure.
Assumes responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice. This includes maintaining current licensure and completing educational requirements.
Follows principles of aseptic technique.
Wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
Wears protective lead and badge
Provides explanation and education to family/significant other at discharge from Cath Lab for outpatients (SERVICE/EXCELLENCE).
Keeps family informed of progress and outcome of procedure.

Follow up phone calling in order to answer questions, problem solve. (Service)
