Description

The Staff RN uses the nursing process to deliver nursing care to a given patient care population as it relates to the care setting. Nursing care is based on the interpretation and execution of the medical and nursing plan of treatment utilizing established procedures standards and protocols of individuals within the assigned work shift. The Staff RN provides nursing care to the population served in the unit.

Department Specific Competencies

  • Provides advanced nursing care to patients undergoing hemodialysis and/or peritoneal dialysis, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care
  • Serves as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing staff; supports onboarding, training, and competency validation
  • Demonstrates expert knowledge in dialysis procedures, vascular access management, and complication recognition/intervention
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams (nephrologists, dietitians, case managers) to optimize patient outcomes
  • Leads or participates in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety efforts, and evidence-based practice projects
  • Assists with workflow coordination, patient assignments, and operational oversight during shifts
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards, infection control protocols, and organizational policies
  • Participates in patient and family education regarding dialysis treatment plans, medications, and self-care
  • Acts as charge nurse or relief leader as needed, supporting unit operations and staff decision-making
  • Contributes to performance improvement, audits, and data tracking related to dialysis outcomes
  • Recognizes and manages vasovagal response to treatment.
  • Assesses and differentiates types of chest and abdominal pain with appropriate intervention.
  • Ensures diet is appropriate and restrictions (food and fluid) are followed.
  • Provides activity/rest as appropriate to patient condition, disease process.
  • Ensures a safe environment for staff and patients
  • Keeps patients clean and turned appropriately.
  • Manages hematomas in A-line puncture sites.
  • Correlates disease process to drug therapies to manage patients with hyper/hypotension, fluid overload, pump failure, dysrhythmias.
  • Reinforces follow up care with physicians ie, blood drug levels, M.D. appointments.
  • Works with medical director and leadership team to improve and develop program to improve outcomes.
