Under the direction of the RN, the technician works cooperatively with all team members to provide direct patient care and transport services. The technician is responsible to adhere to all standards of care within the scope of practice identified, to demonstrate the values of the medical center in their daily work and conduct themselves according to the conditions of employment and standards of conduct.

Core Competencies

Sets up traction bars and trapezes per MD orders. Assists the MD or RN to apply skin traction according to MD orders: Bucks Bryant cervical pelvic balanced suspension.
Assists the RN to apply according to MD orders: arm slings cervical collar braces immobilizers CPM hot ice machine sequential stockings abduction pillows.
Provides cast care to patients as requested.
Assists with cast removal and CPM replacement and Trapeze set up when Ortho Tech is not available.
Measures and adjust crutches as needed and/or requested.
Performs surgical preps for male patients as requested.
Performs EKGs on in-patients when the EKG technician is not available. Refers reading of the EKG to the primary RN or Rapid Response Nurse.
Notifies RN of the EKG and any alert regarding critical results.
Transports patients to procedures or between units as directed.
Uses bed as transport when directed by the RN relative to patient condition.
Utilizes best mode of transportation for the patient, eg wheelchair or transfers to a gurney.
Demonstrates competency in interpersonal relationships and populations served as this applies to job functions and clinical areas assigned.
Maintains traction equipment in good order and stores in a safe manner.
Establishes care priorities and validates action with RN in new, unfamiliar or rapidly changing situations.
Ensures body is logged in per policy.
Ensures that the environment is free of hazards.
Places patient in morgue refrigerator.
Reports any problems with equipment to the house supervisor. Assists the house supervisor/nurse manager when families wish to view bodies: removes body from morgue and places in the viewing room. Ensures that the area is clean and prepared for the family. Ensures linen on the patient is clean. Prepares the body to be viewed, eg open shroud, adjust lighting.
Transports deceased patients to the morgue: identifies the body per policy.
Documents care provided to patients on medical records and reports to the RN.
Maintains a safe working environment: ensures breaks are locked on and locked on gurneys and beds except when moving, ensures side rails are used as directed by the RN for patient safety or mobility, assists patients with ambulation, turning and positioning as requested, keeps units free of hazards/clutter, answers call lights to ensure patient service, identifies patients using two identifiers, observes patients’ rights to privacy and dignity.
Adheres to infection prevention guidelines: washes hands according to policy/procedure, observes isolation policies, cleans equipment according to directions between patients ensuring appropriate time and contact with disinfectants, disposes of infectious waste properly.
Assists patients and families and refers questions to the RN for follow-up.
Responds to code situations to stand by and assist in transfers or support staff as directed by the Nurse Manager.
Initiates emergency measures for patient in cardiopulmonary arrest.
Orients new personnel to equipment and routines.
Assists other team members by offering assistance to distribute the workload.
