Description

Under general direction of the Cath Lab Supervisor, Director of Cardiac Services and Cath Lab Medical Director, The cardiovascular technician works effectively in rendering individualized patient care to less acutely ill patients, critically and/or acutely ill patients. Patient care assignments include patient care, functioning as a scrub assistant to the physician for all diagnostic and coronary intervention procedures.

Core Competencies

Assists the physician by preparing and passing equipment catheters, instruments, manifold/pressure monitoring system for each diagnostic procedure, including but not limited to:. Interventional procedure, PTCAS, stent implantations, directional atherectomy, rotational atherectomy and valvuloplasty Intraaortic balloon placement Endomyocardial biopsies Transseptal, including brachial or radial approach, sones technique.
Monitors patients ECG, blood pressure, arterial and right heart pressures and oxygen saturation readings.
Prepares the room, trays, procedures and patients according to physician preference cards.
Practices aseptic technique in opening sterile drape packs, catheters, equipment and supplies.
Maintains a sterile field throughout each procedure.
Scrubs, gowns, and gloves according to approved techniques.
Cleanses skin immediately following procedure and applies dressings to puncture sites.
Assists in cleaning and preparing the rooms for procedures to follow.
Provides health care services and maintains interpersonal relationships in own job category to all age groups as applicable to job functions. Maintains a safe working environment: Ensures gurneys are in locked position except when transporting, ensures side rails are in up position as indicated, keeps unit free of hazards/clutter, adheres to infection control guidelines, disposes of infectious waste properly, places sharps in proper containers.
Answers the telephone promptly and courteously and relays calls/messages to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
Communicates and assists in maintaining department equipment by: Removing broken equipment per policy, alerting appropriate resources of faulty/broken equipment, assuring management is aware of problem and action taken. Checks and refills supplies, identifies if last item is used.
Assists with orienting new Cardio Vascular Technician to department, equipment, and routines.
Maintains medication security to authorized personnel only.
Assists other team members by offering assistance to distribute the workload.
Takes call as assigned--Responds per departmental policy.
Participates in unit activities: Attends unit and Medical center staff meetings/inservices Is responsible for reading and comprehending all posted minutes and memos, Hospital Performance Improvement process.
Assists in maintaining well functioning unit.
Assists and supports a new or transferred employee through a planned orientation to a specific clinical area.
Collects and analyzes information about the patient and the environment for use in promoting and maintaining patient safety.

Department Specific Competencies

Assists the physician with procedures and care of the patient.
Prepares operating room and/or cath lab strategies in collaboration with the appropriate department management teams, recommending schedule smoothing and/or case cancellation, whenever such strategies are required to mitigate impediments to patient flow
Practices aseptic technique in opening sterile drape packs, catheters, equipment and supplies.
Monitors patients ECG, blood pressure, arterial and right heart pressures and oxygen saturation readings.
Assists the physician by preparing and passing equipment catheters, instruments, manifold/pressure monitoring system for each diagnostic procedure, including but not limited to:. Demonstrates competency in providing monitoring equipment used during exams.
Composes general correspondence in the form of weekly structural heart surgery updates; coordinates follow up letter and TAVR procedure report to primary cardiologist; and correspondence related to clinical issues in the Structural Heart Program.
Adheres to infection control guidelines: uses good hand washing technique, adheres to isolation policy, cleans equipment between patients, helps keep patient rooms and units clean, follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies, setting-up and doing procedures, disposes of infectious waste properly.
Understands role in maintaining medication security to authorized personnel only.
Assists with transfers ensuring secure and complete transfer: collects personal belongings assists patient to wheelchair/gurney accompanies patient to new room provides patient with call light
Identifies opportunities for performance improvement.
Works effectively in Shared Decision Making Model and Council structure.
Participates on committees/Shared Decision Making councils as delegated or elected.

Additional Information
Two years experience in an acute care facility within cardiac emergency room and/or operating room experience. PC skills.

License / Certification Requirements

Arrhythmia recognition and 12-lead EKG course or equivalent.
BCLS or ACLS Certification from the Amercian Heart Association
Dysrhythmia recognition and/or 12-lead EGS course
