Description

The Birth Certificate Technician is responsible primarily for the preparation and processing of birth certificates on newborn patients. This position also provides backup for a variety of functions with the HIM Department requiring advanced knowledge and/or experience such as front office duties, release of information, record analysis, etc. as described below.

Core Competencies

  • Completes Birth Certificates according to California state regulations utilizing the Electronic Birth Registration System (EBRS) provided by the California Department of Public Health..

  • Prepares Paternity Opportunity Program (POP) documents in conjunction with birth certificate process.

  • Transmits/files birth certificates with the Vital Records of the County of Los Angeles in a timely manner.

  • Monitors timely receipt of Newborn Screening Program results (PKU's).

  • Assists the Government Audit Coordinator and front office HIM staff as needed.



Department Specific Competencies

  • Performs Health Information Management receptionist including: answering and forwarding telephone calls as appropriate; mail distributions etc

  • Greet visitors/patients/physicians coming into HIM.

  • Processes Release of Information Requests including scanning to the electronic medical record.

  • Assists Release of Information/Medicolegal Correspondents as appropriate

  • Retrieves/prepares/scans medical records and loose documents for inclusion in the EMR.

  • Retrieves records from Iron Mountain offsite storage vendor.
