Description

The Staff RN uses the nursing process to deliver nursing care to a given patient care population as it relates to the care setting. Nursing care is based on the interpretation and execution of the medical and nursing plan of treatment utilizing established procedures standards and protocols of individuals within the assigned work shift. The Staff RN provides nursing care to the population served in the unit.

  • Implements interventions that support developmental stage for pediatric patient e.g doesnt give choices to young child when there are none, involves adolescent in decision making.

  • Performs all clinical procedures for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients per department policies, as assigned.

  • Sees newly admitted pediatric patients to determine childs perceptions related to his/her illness and hospitalization.

  • Administers respiratory care as prescribed by physicians for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, as assigned, including, but not limited to, metered dose inhalers, hand held nebulizers, various oxygen therapy devices, chest physiotherapy, nasal, oral, and tracheal suctioning, mechanical ventilation set-up and maintenance, stabilizing and maintaining artifical airways, and instructing patients in effective cough and breathing techniques.

  • Identifies the nutritional needs of various age groups (pediatrics, adults, geriatrics) and recommends appropriate nutrition intervention specific to those age groups.

  • Implements infant abduction prevention and responds accordingly. Utilizes identification system for mother and baby.



  • Performs central line care as outlined in hospital policy and procedure.



  • Implements universal protocol for unit population.



  • Participates in mock code. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in responding to pediatric emergencies.



  • Patient/Family Involvement - Facilitates family/patient participation in the emotional and physical care of the patient

  • Identifies high-risk, dependent child relationships and takes actions to prevent possible or further infliction of physical, sexual, or emotional harm or neglect of basic necessities of life

  • Ensures safety of infant and child- activates security system on admission, ensures teaches parent positioning and use of crib rails.
