Description

Responsible for protocol management and to assist physicians to enroll and monitor patients placed on clinical trials as assigned. General areas of responsibility include protocol administration, patient identification, protocol eligibility confirmation, randomization/registration, data collection, quality control and study materials management.

Department Specific Competencies

  • Ensures research study participant protections are observed.

  • Assesses physical status of research participants for entry to studies, reaction to medications and per protocols

  • Screens research candidates for study eligibility per protocols.

  • Screens patients referred for participation in clinical trials to determine eligibility requiring the ability to effectively communicate.

  • Participates in coordination of research which impacts nursing resources within assigned area(s).

  • Disseminates research findings through presentations and publications.

  • Provides education to research program participants

  • Assists in preparing protocols for review by Research Operations Committee (ROC), Program Board, and Institutional Review Board (IRB).

  • Stages patients participating in clinical trials; explains protocols to patients; obtains informed consent, registers patients according to protocol; notifies physicians and staff of treatment prescription.

  • Abstracts pertinent medical information of patients entered in clinical trials requiring the ability to access, input, retrieve and analyze computerized information.

  • Educates physicians, staff and patients on treatment plans and rationales of on-going clinical trials.

  • Maintains clinical records, clinical notes, and reports to the physician any changes in the patients condition.

  • Utilizes chain of command to report adverse clinical or behavioral outcomes

  • Collaborate with Clinical Education, Nurse Researcher, APNs and other clinical educators to embed research/best practice into staff education.

  • Records pertinent patient data in a clinical record.

  • Provides ongoing clinical support to patients and peers as needed

  • Consistently keeps current on clinical, unit, department and medical center changes; shares information and coaches staff members about their responsibility to be well informed

  • Analyzes patient lab data to assist with clinical decision making.

  • Consults with nurse colleagues and other disciplines in education, research and clinical practice issues.

  • Assists and supports a new or transferred employee through a planned orientation to a specific clinical area.

  • Classifies ALL drugs for patients so patient can refer to written actions, side effects and clinical indications.

  • Applies the nursing process as the basis for clinical judgment and decision making, nursing theory, and research.

Compensation Range: 

$54.74 - 84.69/hr
