Description

The Echo Technician IV is responsible for the overall operation of the echo lab and oversees all the clinical work of the Technical Staff, and serves in the role of Technical Director for Echo Accreditation. The Echo Technician IV performs and produces highest quality images on all types of cardiac ultrasound examinations using established protocols requiring little/no supervision of technical detail. These procedures are performed on all age groups. These procedures are performed according to department and Medical Center standards, and are interpreted by a qualified physician.

  • Maintains proficiency in Advances structural heart procedures and imaging requirements.

  • Assumes responsibility for day to day operations of the echo lab, maintenance and operation of equipment, ensures quality patient care and compliance of technical and ancillary staff to standards established within the department.

  • Maintains and troubleshoots PAC’s system as needed.

  • Maintains proficiency with structured reporting system including upgrades and changes. Runs reports as needed.

  • Implements all policies related to echo lab.

  • Maintains a Continuous Quality Improvement Process.

  • Maintains proficiency and competency of echo techs.

  • Implements and maintains appropriate educational instruction for Technologists.

  • Maintains records and documents in accordance with guidelines of accrediting agencies.

  • Oversees the overall organization of echo lab including daily assignments, lunches, breaks, staffing and supplies.

  • Orients technical staff.

  • Maintains professional education in the field of echocardiography testing as required by Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for Echocardiography to maintain accredited status of the echocardiography lab.

  • Exercises sound judgment in relating the physician’s order to actual conditions of the patient; and consults with Medical Director and/or attending physician in questionable situations.

  • Cleans/disinfects/sterilizes TEE probes according to Medical Center policy.

  • Adheres to infection control guidelines: uses good handwashing technique, adheres to isolation policy, cleaning equipment between patients.

  • Prepares studies for interpretation by physician, including calculation of cardiac structures.

  • Prepares patient for procedure.

  • Transports patients and/or echo equipment as necessary.

  • Initiates Code Blue and life support measures when indicated according to BCLS and hospital policy.

  • Ensures patient safety and confidentiality while performing exam.

  • Provides patient and family with information/ instructions regarding procedure, evaluating barriers to understanding.

  • Works effectively in Shared Decision Making Model and Council structure.

  • Utilizes effective communication and problem solving skill in all interactions.

  • Takes responsibility for learning about trends and changes in echocardiography.

  • Maintains appropriate current documentation of training, experience, and continuing education and such documentation shall be available for inspection upon request by IAC.

  • Assists in selection process of hiring technical echo staff.

  • Evaluates and initiates equipment service/repair and purchase of new equipment.

  • Maintains safe working and patient environment.

  • Participates in department meetings, inservice education, and policy/procedure review.

  • Assumes on-call status and call back as assigned, responding within 30 minutes of receiving call.

  • Oversees training and orientation of new employees and student, assures competency of all echo techs.



Department Specific Competencies

  • Performs all echo procedures including transthoracic, transesophageal, stress echo, 3-D echo, contract echo, bubble study echo. Proficient in Advances structural heart procedure and imaging acquisition.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of clinical norms for the following age groups: infants, children, teenage, young, middle and geriatric adults.

Compensation Range

$45.74 - $75.33 / Hour
