Position Summary
The Director of Supply Chain is a key operational leadership role responsible for executing the supply chain strategy for a specific region, product division, or large plant. This leader will manage the daily activities of procurement, production planning, logistics, and inventory control to meet safety, quality, cost, and delivery targets. This role requires a hands-on, results-driven leader who can optimize processes, solve complex operational problems, and lead a team to excellence.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Operational Execution & Planning:
- Execute the tactical S&OP process for the assigned region/business unit, translating demand forecasts into actionable production and procurement plans.
- Manage daily procurement activities for raw materials (e.g., steel coil, cement, aggregate, resin) to support uninterrupted production schedules.
- Oversee all logistics operations, including inbound freight of raw materials and outbound shipment of finished goods, optimizing for cost and on-time delivery.
- Manage day-to-day inventory levels (raw materials, WIP, finished goods) to achieve target service levels and inventory turns set by VP-level strategy.
Process Improvement & Cost Management:
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) within the supply chain function to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and lower costs.
- Manage and report on regional/divisional supply chain KPIs. Analyze performance data to identify trends and execute corrective actions.
- Assist in the development and manage the adherence to the departmental budget for the assigned area of responsibility.
Supplier & Logistics Management:
- Manage tactical relationships with regional suppliers and logistics providers, ensuring they meet performance metrics for cost, quality, and delivery.
- Address and resolve daily issues related to supplier performance, transportation delays, and production material shortages.
Team Leadership & Development:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of supply chain professionals, including planners, buyers, and logistics coordinators.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork within the supply chain department.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position directly manages individual contributors and team leads within the supply chain function for their assigned area (e.g., Buyers, Planners, Logistics Supervisors).
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Proven experience in operational supply chain management within a manufacturing environment.
- Strong tactical skills in procurement, production planning, inventory control, and logistics.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on root-cause analysis and corrective action.
- Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to motivate teams and drive daily performance.
- Effective communication and negotiation skills to manage internal and external stakeholder relationships.
- Proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., Oracle, SAP) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Education and Experience
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
- Required: Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in supply chain operations, with at least 5+ years in a management role.
- Required: Experience in a manufacturing environment; experience with heavy industry or made-to-order products is a strong plus.
- Preferred: Certification in supply chain (e.g., CPIM, CSCP) or continuous improvement (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma).
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- This role operates in a combination of a professional office environment and a manufacturing plant floor. Must be able to wear required PPE.
- Travel requirement: approximately 10% (primarily regional).
