Summary:
 
The Clinical Extern works as member of the healthcare team, as an unregulated care provider, in the inpatient and/or outpatient care units at The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group (ROHCG).  
 
As part of the inter-professional healthcare team, the Clinical Extern supports high quality care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience. 
 
The Clinical Extern works in collaboration with the team under the direct supervision of a Regulated Nurse (Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse) and Extern Mentor/Coordinator as applicable. The Clinical Extern develops their competencies through learning, education, experience and reflective practice. Clinical Externs are involved with activities of daily living, and other nursing interventions that are assigned or delegated to them by the nurse.
 
All Clinical Externs must complete mandatory training required for ROHCG orientation and unit orientation activities.
 
Duties:
 
Accountability #1: Clinical Care
  • Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a nurse (RN or RPN) to ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties;
  • Participates in patient assessments as directed and within identified skill level, including vital signs and physical assessment;
  •  Assists with activities of daily living; Feeding, bathing/grooming and toileting.  Bed making, responding to client requests, including call bells.
  • Weighing clients; Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating as needed;
  • Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards;
  • Contributes to care planning, safety planning and evaluation;
  • Documentation of care provided and results of assessment findings;
  • Engages in additional skills as approved.
Accountability #2: Policies and Professional Standards
  • Follows organizational policies and professional standards while taking into account the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) guidance for unregulated care providers.
Accountability #3: Other
  • Requests assistance with assigned duties when necessary.
  • Contributes to and supports positive team functioning.
  • Works in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal
  • Ensures a work environment that is conducive to The Royal’s Harassment-Free Workplace and Occupational Health and Safety policies
 
Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of 2nd year, and enrolled in third or fourth year in the BScN.
  • Successful completion of 1st year and enrolled in second year of the Practical Nursing diploma (RPN).
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
  • Excellent academic standing
  • Psychiatric/mental health nursing experience (clinical practicums) with individuals with mental illness and/or addictions is an asset.
  • Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices is an asset
  • Demonstrated excellent problem-solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • The ability to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds is necessary.
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, comprehension, reading and writing.  Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.

Salary Range: 21.22 to  21.22 per hour
