Who are we?

We are The Motley Fool, a purpose-driven financial information and services firm with nearly 30 years of experience focused on making the world smarter, happier, and richer. But what does that even mean?! It means we’re helping Fools (always with a capital “F”) demystify the world of finance, beat the stock market, and achieve personal wealth and happiness through our products and services.

The Motley Fool is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. We are a motley group of overachievers that have built a culture of trust founded on Foolishness, fun, and a commitment to making the world smarter, happier and richer.  However you identify or whatever winding road has led you to us, please don't hesitate to apply if the description above leaves you thinking, "Hey! I could do that!"

What does this team do?

If there’s a dollar sign in it, chances are it’s crossed these Fools’ desks — our Finance team handles everything including invoices, taxes, payroll, and more taxes. Due to their stellar work, The Motley Fool is staying financially fit as we continue to grow our business. They make sure that we’re paying our bills on time and accurately reporting financials for business leaders as well as the company at large. “Budget” is this team’s middle name (figuratively) since they’re responsible for (literally) all of our money.

What would you do in this role?

The Finance/Accounting Team at The Motley Fool is combing through the humdrum world of internal controls and auditing to find a FUN and dynamic Staff Accountant to help with the daily and monthly accounting operations of our high-growth, global business.

We’re looking for someone with the dig in and get it done attitude who can be a GL ninja and do reconciliations like a champ, but also has the knowledge or willingness to learn all aspects of operations for our business (including payroll, benefits and local compliance).  We’re a highly collaborative, customer service-focused team that brings high energy and a sense of humor to a world governed by numbers and decimal points.  The Staff Accountant must be comfortable moving quickly, working on several projects simultaneously while prioritizing importance, being a team player, and interacting with Fools (yes, we call our employees Fools!) throughout all levels of the organization.

But what does this role actually do?

  • Responsible for the daily/monthly/year end accounting for all accounts related to the company’s multiple operating entities
    • Responsibilities include processing monthly invoices, posting journal entries, updating sub-ledgers, and preparing monthly reconciliations
  • Assist in compliance work to ensure everything is completed accurately and timely
  • Analyze monthly variances to provide explanations to management
  • Prepare general ledger entries by maintaining records and files; reconciling accounts.
  • Work with other consultants to complete various service engagements, as necessary
  • Provide ad hoc reports and insights to management, as necessary
  • Provide documentation for external auditors

What do you need to apply?

  • 2+ years’ experience in accounting, tax or auditing (internal or external)
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Service mindset- you champion our mantra that accounting treats the rest of the company as our valued customers
  • Desire for constant improvement of processes, creativity, and tenacity
  • Excel guru - we want to hear about your favorite/most obscure function!
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Deadline oriented, but with a flexible and adaptable mindset
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance

It’s even better if you have…

  • Familiarity with the Fool’s products and services
  • CPA or CPA Candidate
  • Experience with NetSuite Accounting System
