What does this team do?

The Data Engineering team at The Motley Fool creates data pipelines to wrangle data from around the Fool. We collaborate with everyone - from third party vendors to stakeholders to build easily consumable data structures for reporting and business insights. While working closely with our business analysts and machine learning specialists, we serve the data needs of all The Motley Fool Teams! 


What would you do in this role?

As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible for expanding and optimizing data, the data pipeline architecture, the data flow, and collection for cross-functional teams. You are an experienced data pipeline builder and data wrangler who enjoys optimizing data systems and building them from the ground up. As a crucial part of the business, you will guide and support our software developers, database architects, data analysts, and data scientists on business initiatives while ensuring optimal data delivery architecture is consistent. Whether it’s working on a solo project or with the team, you are self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems, and products.

But what does this role actually do?

  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet business requirements, and work closely with Business Intelligence team to build in sustainable business logic
  • Leverage data assets to meet mission needs, ensuring consistent data quality, and establishing data standards and governance
  • Architect and maintain a scalable data infrastructure, via ETL/ELTs and third party tools, that is cost-effective, meets stakeholders’ requirements, and is highly available
  • Partner with stakeholders, including the Executive, Tech, Data, Client Experience, and Marketing teams to support their data infrastructure needs in an agile, collaborative environment.
  • As needed, document topology, processes, and solution architecture.
  • Assist with the training and enablement of data consumers
  • Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative industry leader.
  • Share your passion for staying on top of tech trends, experimenting with and learning new technologies


What do you need to apply?

  • Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL).
  • 3+ years of data modeling in a data warehouse, and building ELTs or ETLs
  • 3+ years with Python
  • 2+ years of experience in cloud services, AWS preferred.
  • Comfortable using the command line
  • Experience with cloud data storage and compute components, like EC2s, containers.
  • Ability to work with stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical requirements. 
  • Project management and organizational skills to get stakeholder buy-in, drive project work, and deliver results with minimal supervision
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Proven problem-solving skills and ability to apply critical/analytical thinking to deliver sustainable and creative solutions to complex requirements.
  • Strong team player, with desire to learn new skills and broaden experience

  • 2+ years with Snowflake
  • 2+ years with Docker
  • 1+ years with Apache Airflow
  • 1+ years with Dataiku or AWS SageMaker
  • Tableau experience
