Director, Research Data Engineering

The Climate Corporation seeks a high-performing Director to oversee our research data Pipelines, Automation and Tooling (PAT).  This role will provide global strategy, direction and oversight for R&D data ingest and structuring, as well as lead the development of code for enabling rapid prototyping, development, and scaling of agronomic and other data science models for testing prior to commercialization.  This role must manage and optimize complex data sources and code repositories.  Additionally, this role will serve as the primary point of contact with engineering teams in adjacent units within The Climate Corporation and throughout Bayer Crop Science, helping guide our overarching data architectures and infrastructure for conducting effective and efficient data science research at scale. 

The Climate Science team is responsible for identifying value opportunities from diverse and complex digital farming information (including millions of acres of grower data), demonstrate value of new information, models or business approaches and support global commercial organizations to implement digital tools to enhance our $19B agricultural business.  Digital farming is a new and complex business opportunity that is positioned to fundamentally transform our agricultural business.  The scientific work at the Climate Corporation is core to our Crop Science mission of creating tailored solutions via world-class innovation, new standards in sustainability, operational efficiency and pioneering the digital transformation of agriculture and our company.

This role will report directly to the Chief Scientist, and will serve as a member of the Science Leadership Team.

Business Leadership Expectations:

  • Member of Science Leadership Team directing broad digital farming strategy and science research
  • Accountable for team management, people coaching, partner influence, resource management, goal setting, progress tracking and communication to partner and leadership teams
  • Drive year-over-year improvement in operations and program results that have a direct and tangible impact on business

Data Pipelines

  • Working knowledge of common design patterns and coding principles including data management, reproducibility etc.
  • Highly adaptable and familiar with multiple programming languages and technologies
  • Coordinate with Engineering and other functions to leverage and enhance existing systems and infrastructure, in addition to building new pipelines and infrastructure where necessary
  • Work with key partners across Science teams to define requirements of analysis ready data 
  • Process R&D data from diverse sources and various legacy systems to make it available for research purposes

Automation and Tooling

  • Establish and maintain a process for identifying and prioritizing the development of automation and tooling to accelerate day-to-day research activities 
  • Ensure proper scientific and code review, as well as documentation, for all automated processes and tooling that is developed
  • Enable the testing of models at scale, as needed, prior to commercial deployment
  • Facilitate the transition from research code to production as models mature and are commercially deployed

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in science or engineering, or an equivalent quantitative discipline
  • Functional experience in science management, data architecture/engineering management, product management or project management on large scale research projects
  • Extensive hands-on experience and managing teams that architect, design, build and deploy complex software systems
  • Experience operating in a matrixed research environment, comfortable with ambiguity and leading by influence
  • Strong track record working with a diversity of data types and resources
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate as a member of an agile, high-performing team  
  • Budget and people management experience 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Strong drive to learn new topics and skills and to develop innovative products for our customers
  • Experience in farming practices and application of digital ag technologies
  • Demonstrated success in enabling successful large scale research projects
  • Experience operating in a matrixed research environment, comfortable with ambiguity and leading by influence
  • Experience working with statisticians, software engineers, scientists with modeling expertise, field research, and/or hardware engineering
