Weather Data Specialist 

Position Overview:

The Climate Corporation (TCC) is looking for a stellar Data Specialist with a passion for managing weather data. In the rapidly innovating field of atmospheric science, datasets from new and improved instruments and better weather models are constantly being published.  We leverage such datasets, along with detailed agronomic data, to tackle real-world problems facing farmers by synergizing our expertise in environmental sciences, statistics, machine learning, agronomy and software development in cloud computing. For TCC to remain the leader in digital agriculture, we must maintain and update our weather services with the latest, highest quality weather information.

The ideal candidate is an atmospheric scientist experienced with handling voluminous weather data and dealing with its extreme diversity in variable types, scales, sources, formats, and quality. The candidate possesses the creativity and tenacity to meet the challenges of acquiring such diverse data, which is often accessible via somewhat esoteric means. They also have demonstrable data science and computational skills, desire to work in a highly collaborative team environment, and excellent communication skills.

What You Will Do:

  • Investigate and explore new or improved weather datasets to identify those with potential to benefit TCC and its customers
  • Acquire, validate, and process weather data to make it accessible in a fast-paced and cross-disciplinary research and development environment
  • Apply state-of-the-art verification techniques to evaluate the skill and utility of weather observations, analyses, and forecasts with respect to agronomic applications
  • Design and generate derived weather parameters focused on use by agronomic models or in decision making by farmers
  • Collaborate with scientists across the organization to realize the full value of weather information
  • Write beautiful, robust, well-documented and well-tested research and library code


Basic Qualifications:

  • MS in atmospheric science or a closely related discipline
  • 2+ years experience working with, and effectively employing, a wide variety of surface and remotely sensed weather observations as well as gridded analyses and forecasts
  • Experience conducting research in atmospheric science
  • Expertise across the spectrum of verification tools and metrics used for effective analysis of weather data quality in both skill and value
  • Exceptional programming skills with Python (including Pandas, Numpy, Scipy, and general scientific python libraries) or Matlab with demonstrated ability to write well-structured, well-tested, maintainable, performant, and well-documented code.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in atmospheric science or a closely related discipline
  • Experience in production and display of verification results that clearly convey comprehensive evaluation of both deterministic and probabilistic weather data
  • Talent in creating user-facing metrics and analysis that build trust and understanding of weather products with customers
  • Insight into weather impacts on agriculture
  • Experience with other programming languages like Scala, Java, or C++ and contributions to open source scientific software
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to convey rigorous technical concepts and considerations to non-experts
